New members - say hello right here : )

Hello from Pembrokeshire,

My name is Bob, I'm 67 and have been playing pinball since the 60s. Until recently, I thought that, owning a pinball machine was just a pipe dream. Now I am in a position I haven't been in for many years (more money coming in than going out) , plus I have loads of space and there's no one to tell me I can't.

I don't really have a preference for which machine I get, I figure I can get used to anything by now (maybe, after a while, I'll start to be a bit selective but , right now, I'm keen to get something). Only 'must have' for me is that it is working (I'd like to cut my teeth maintaining a working machine rather than jump straight in on a project).

Talking of buying a machine, I saw somewhere that there is a buyer's guide under one of the threads. I presume that covers what to look for and what questions to ask, does it also cover the buying sequence? By that I mean is it something like that seller posts, buyer replies, then PM to do the negotiation, etc. At what stage does the money change hands (assuming it is not being picked up in person?) On this last point, I see lots of mentions of Martin, I presume he is the specialist transport, does he cover West Wales? Questions, questions, questions.... I have got loads, Is there a FAQ that I can browse? I'm sure the info I'm looking for is already available but there is so much information here it will take me an age to find out. I'd rather be getting on with making a purchase...)

Apologies for the waffle

Regards
Bob

Welcome Bob, I was your way the other week getting a Lost world running is that a neighbour of yours?
I’m waiting on 2 of my machines to be bought ( junkyard and Roadshow ) in the next week or so if it falls through I will let you know if you are interested.
The amount of miles I’ve clocked up picking machines up is unreal but worth it. Small price to pay living in Pembrokeshire😁

Welcome Gonzo. Popeye rocks....... depending on who you ask😬. @Sgt GrizZ is your man for all things Popeye.

Thanks for your welcome.

In terms of depth Popeye has a decent rule-set once you fully understand the game. It's a hell of a challenge and there are some rewarding shots.

Given the choice I would have gone for a LOTR but Home Leisure wanted 5K + and I just didn't have it. It was down to the choice of an NBA and Gottlieb Gladiators. Then the Popeye came up which was ideal as a first machine. My friend has a ton of spare Bally parts and the person I purchased it off owns a lot of machines and was very trustworthy.

I can understand why people don't like it though. The ball can vanish from sight, the animal kicker is a good idea but noisy and poorly designed. The geometry seems wrong at times and Bluto firing the ball at speed between the flippers is infuriating.

That being said, I love it. Once I was accustomed to the rules I found myself able to stack-up three multiball modes in a row and use the upper play-field quite well. Hitting all of the 5 spinach shots in sequence is very rewarding on the rare occasions it happens.

I'm keeping it.

Mate, one mans turd is another’s treasure. You picked well. Oh and don’t EVER even think about buying from HLD. Their target market is footballers and other rich folk. You can pick up games from here at a fraction of the price. After all, they buy from here then flip on their site at hugely inflated prices anyway!!

I have too many machines, if you are interested in Spiderman, 24, Big Buck Hunter, or Dr Who. Give me a shout!

Yes, I'm just a few doors away. He suggested joining this community. I joined, saw something I liked, bought it and now am having a bit of a time getting it delivered (Martin doesn't come this far out...) . I may have a solution in place, fingers crossed. Once it is here I will post a brief recap of the experience.
I've spent my 'toy fund' but I can dip into the 'oh ship' fund if the price is right :)

Let me know if you have a transport problem as the person buying the machines from me uses someone who might be able to pick yours up, mine are going Yorkshire way but the company is nationwide I believe.

Thanks mate, I've learnt that now. Much as I'd like a LOTR I'd much rather have three machines for £1500 each than one for five grand.

Can you have TOO Many machines Matt? ;)

I'll be looking to spend about £1200 on my next pin. I'm not really too sure what but a DMD Bally/Williams of some description I guess? After purchasing the Popeye and enjoying it despite the reviews, I'm quite open minded really.

Lovely site this btw. I can see myself spending a lot of time on here 😬.

DMD pin for £1200 may be pushing it particularly for Bally/Williams...
Yeah I know, that being said a WCS went for £1300 yesterday and I should have got it really. I'm not in a huge hurry anyway and the chap that I got the Popeye from has a couple of Indiana Jones so I might wait until he's renovated them and save up.

Hi all, my name is Dave I am 54 and live in Shepshed near Loughborough. The first pin I played was Kiss in 1978 then moved to Africa for 3 years and played lots of machines from 60s to 70s, came back to UK and bought first pin in 1986, a newish Paragon I moved to Shepshed nearly 2 years ago and became big mates with Telboy who introduced me to the wonderful world of Stern I am borrowing a Nascar at the moment I have just bought a Spiderman from Mel (forum member) and also own a Gorgar which is an ongoing project.
Still on the shopping list is a Metallica Premium if I can ever find one then an Iron Maiden Pro, If anyone hears of either title then please let me know, Cheers

My name is Chris and I don't really like pinball......

I played a lot as a kid in the early 90's (IJ specifically) but then got back into it just over a year ago after having messed about with MAME cabs for a bit. I currently have a couple of pins (Roadshow and Whirlwind) and am looking for number 3, even though I'm going to have to get creative to fit it in my kitchen. I also like fixing them up and playing competitively and think this forum is awesome!

3 pinball machines - wow this was written a long time ago :)

Hi there, I'm Alex from Essex, been collecting arcade machines for a few years now and managed to get hold of an Addams Family Pinball, which I am in the process of restoring. Looking for help to ensure its still working in another 25 years!

Cheers
Welcome Alex

Hi Pinheads!

I'm a pin newbie of 52. I've been a video gamer all my life but recently got a bit bored with same-game-but-better-graphics every year and went to Flipout London one Sunday. Over four months I went most Sundays but only occasionally embarrassing myself by talking to the pinheads there. They were very kind and welcoming to me in any case :). I have now purchased my first pins (AC/DC Premium and The Addams Family) with Medieval Madness Remake coming at the end of the year. I'd love Iron Maiden or The Walking Dead but I only have room for three and the Fiance says three is three too many :(. She also said, "THREE pinball machines! You can only play one at a time, why THREE?!"

I'm around Didcot, UK and enjoying the new community. See you around...

The transport worked out OK (despite a shaky start - messages were being relayed from the broker to the contractor and then back, took a full hour for reply to question, not realising this delay, I had three or four questions in the pipeline, each one depending on the previous answer (bit like a two Ronnies sketch where they answered the previous question...)
Anyway, it is here now and I'm enjoying getting my hands dirty sorting out the little niggles. It is working but it is not perfect, so I'm going round doing jobs as I see them (if I had more knowledge, I might have done things in a slightly different way, still, the more times you take stuff apart and put it together again, the less of a mystery it is. Just making up a shopping list for the next few jobs...
