'L' means logic level gate (i.e. 5v), the F variant has a much higher on voltage. In most situations they would not be interchangeable sorry

Looking at the device specification, I think you should be OK using an IRL540 in place of an IRF540 in a typical switching application. The only difference is the "on" threshold voltage: 4V for an IRF540, 2V for the IRL540.
The other way round, using an IRF540 in an application designed for an IRL540, (e.g. switching from 3.3V logic) would not work.
