Here’s a good one

Started to LED my LOTR using pinball-led.co.uk Premium 2SMD LED’s in the inserts.

All is good apart from the ghosting / strobing (call it what you like) on any lamp in column 7 of the lamp matrix, there is a high level of ‘bulb being on when not supposed to be’ when any other lamp in the same row is on.

So if any bulb on row 1 is active, the bulb row 1, column 7 will flicker. Happens on all columns in the matrix. There's no issues with normal incandescent bulbs.

Any suggestions? I will try removing the LED behind the palantir that was there when I got it, not sure if this would cause an issue on the rest of the column though.

Thanks

Appreciate the comment Chris but would like to give this a go.

Have put mote LEDs in now and row 3 is doing the same so both row 3 and column 7 are having the issue.

There seems to be a load problem or excess voltage issue. I will phone you tomorrow as agreed to take you through a few steps and see if we can identify the issue. I know you have bought leds for other machines that you are very happy with.

If we can't sort the issue out even if it's a problem with the machine we will always refund 100% your order no questions asked.

Kindest regards David

Thanks David

Just to emphasise, the problem is that any lamp in column 7 will ghost when a corresponding lamp in the same row is on.

Column 7 issue:
Return of the King is row 1 column 7, any lamp in row 1 being on will make this one ghost
Legolas is in row 2 column 7, any lamp in row 2 being on will make this one ghost

On row 3, it seems more than the LED's are lit up when they shouldn't be rather than flickering on and off.

Regards the other LED's from you, they were already installed in the NGG and they were excellent in that, no issues whatsoever

Another video showing the issue

This time, Return of the King and Legolas of column 7 have LED's and Mystery of row 3 has an LED

The hardware was designed for incandescent lamps so I suppose it's not surprising there are issues when what are effectively non-standard parts are fitted.

I'd be interested to hear what the solution (if there is one) is though, I've had a couple of Whitestar games with ghosting LEDs and in the T3 I had I just ended up taking most of them out, which was a shame as if there is any game that suits LEDs it's T3!

It was when that trick didn't work that I got fed up and took them all off!!!

Have been recommended on pinside to check the diodes:

What is the best way to check the existing lamp diodes to see if they are fine or not other than visually checking them?
Can 1N4004 diodes be used for lamps? Only have these ones available at the moment if any need changing
If I replace a diode does it matter which direction it is put into the IDC bulb holder?
Is there a specific method for removing the cable and diode from the IDC bulb holder and putting them back in?

470ohm resistor on the led?
@alchy can you answer this?

Thanks

Hi yes you can use those diodes. Any value as long as its higher voltage of course :)

I will ring you shortly after you have had time for you breakfast with all the testing on diodes etc..

Yes, the LED OCD board is installed.

This board does fix the small amount of ghosting on all the other LED's inserts so it is doing its job properly.

However it obviously cannot fix the issue I'm having which are not caused by the LED's themselves but by something else.

Progress, huzzah! :)

I've taken the palantir globe lamp out, which funnily enough was on row 3 column 7 and there is zero ghosting now.

That's obviously where the problem lies

No, having no lamp at all fixes it.

Seems the either the bulb holder or diode are at fault here

Must add that the LED OCD board really does the job here, zero ghosting on any inserts and it looks awesome now :)

Not cheap but recommended
