As I've got the week off work between Christmas and New Year I thought I'll shop out JD and add a few bits and pieces I've ordered over the last week or so. For those who may be interested I'll chuck some pics up as I go. I'd be interested in peoples opinions and tips for shopping as this will be the 1st pin I've had a proper go at

Thanks to the generosity of The Modfather I've already got red and blue flashers installed in the pursuit lights and green lamps (with a blue flasher) in the Deadworld. Also ordered and hopefully arriving soonish are:

  • Fluorescent green Deadworld mod kit
  • Magnetic Jam Trough Protector
  • New slingshot plastics and protectors
  • Playfield and shooter lane light mods (courtesy of Mr Dreads)
  • Replacement drop target (one of the 5 bank is cracked)
  • New rubbers and balls

I'm also going to install the drop target decals that I knocked up in Photoshop

I started stripping down the front half of the pf last night so here's a few pics of the story so far.

How it looks before I start:

This is how I'm making sure I know how to put things back together (along with a load of pics of the pin itself). The parts and the sheet of paper then go into a food bag.

I'm really pleased as it's a lot cleaner than I expected

Wow - that actually looks pretty clean already. I'd say someone definately gave that a good cleanup at sometime in the past. Normally loads of dust and irt under the apron.



Sounds like you are pretty organised. If its yr first time stripping a game down I'd certainly recommend doing small areas at a time - strip, clean, rebuild - where possible. Much more manageable and less daunting than being faced with a blank playfield and parts you stripped off maybe weeks or even months before :eek: Especially a game like Dredd with many layered ramps, support posts etc.



Make sure you clean *everywhere* the ball travels on the game - especially not forgetting underplayfield subways, troughs and mechs. Otherwise the game will quickly dirty up again.



Oh and my top tip would be if something doesn't want to move/come aprt/whatever ....*dont* force it - step back and have a good look again. There is usually a good reason why. I bet everyone on here who has shopped out pins has at some point stupidly cracked or broken something in a rush to remove it :oops:

There use to be a shop out guide to JD on the internet but it doesn't seem to be there any more...

I did have a hard copy somewhere but not sure if I gave it to the new owner of the game that I used to have. :confused:
 
Thanks for the input guys, I think I'm definitely going to shop in stages as suggested. Been watching the guy on youtube shop a TZ and he goes the same way. I'll start with the bottom half as I've got that stripped down before tackling the more tricky looking top half. I'm guessing I can do the under pf scoops and troughs last.



I do have a question about cleaning products though. The Swedish guy on Youtube says he's using window cleaner for doing the initial clean before using Novus 2. Is this the same as Windowlene and can I use that? What have others used?
 
I use this - or a similar product from Maplins etc - initially for really dirty areas of playfield, dirty ramps etc. Works a treat. Great for clearing out that crud and gunk in under playfield troughs too.

All plastics, star posts etc I usually wash in warm soapy water. Use old toothbrush on star posts if they are reuseable.



Novus 2 of course great for cleaning/shining up playfield, plastics.



Windowlene I normally only use on glass, backglass. Though it will give nice shine to plastics too.

Plastics are ok to go in water...it doesn't damage the decal side?

Yep plastics fine in water.



I would be careful though with ramps where they have a decal attached on the underside - quite often the corners or edges of those seem to have started lifting.

There's a part of me that's annoyed by the pf mylar and wants to remove it. Then I have a word with myself and say it's in good nick and not worth the hassle...just needs a polish. I've also took the trough apart to give that a good clean as well.....

One thing to watch out for when you do the deadworld mod (if it goes same way mine did), if the crane does not pick up properly in test mode try again when playing the game normally before adjusting the crane and planet disc. I've spent hours in test mode adjusting these with no success only to find they worked fine in normal play. Maybe the magnet power is reduced in test mode for some reason....



Been thinking of those shooter lane flickering lights myself. Already got the blue back playfield light from Dreads and it looks miles better. Put an extra couple of sticky pads on though as found the three supplied don't stand the test of time and heat too good.

Cheers JMP, I'd already experienced this when adjusting the crane when I first got the pin. I had exactly yhte same thing as you where it didn't work right in test but is spot on in the game :confused:



I've cleaned and wet'n'dryed the trough and it looks nice and shiny but I can't shift the ground in dirt in the shooter lane and at the ball eject point. Anyone got any tips on the best way to deal with this? I've been alternating between foam cleaner to lift the dirt and Novus 2 to scrub it away but it's struggling to shift it

You could try Magic Eraser - some people have success with it. Use it gently though especially on painted delicate areas - you'll be alright in the shooter lane.

Sometimes the only real way to get out ground in dirt is to sand and reclearcoat.

Really pleased with the trough metals after a bit of wet and dry. I think I'll be doing this on all of the above pf metal as well. I'll chuck a pic up shortly when I've finished...

Johnson's baby wipes - original not sensitive. Wipes away even the most ground in dirt.

The camera battery died so I wasn't able to take many new pics but I have got a load more work done today. The bottom half of the playfield has been cleaned with Novus and a couple of coats of wax applied. I've also started cleaning the various plastics in prep for refitting. The main jobs for today though were to remove and clean some under pf parts....subway scoop, plastic tunnel and left hand side VUK. I managed to lose the spring off the VUK under my MAME cab for a while after it pinged itself apart when I was holding on to it properly....found it eventually though and now cleaned and refitted

Tomorrows jobs are to finish cleaning the remaining plastics and then start on all the metal parts with cleaner and wet'n'dry.
 
I've been cleaning up the metal parts again today. It's taking a while as I'm doing it by hand with wet'n'dry but I'm pleased with the results. Some before and after pics below.

Unfortunately there's a lot of metal on JD so plenty more of this to do before I can put the bottom half of the pf back together. I've also been waxing the pf whilst sorting the metal, there's 5 coats of Gerlitz No1 on there now....

Bit the bullet today and removed the ramps and plastics from the top half of the pf.....

Hope I can remember how to put it all back together :eek: It's pretty dirty at the top half, looks like the ramps haven't been off in a while. I've got a load more metal lane guides to remove and then I can start cleaning.

Never seen that before myself either, my machine came with the main ring on its own. Does it go under the planet?
 
I have a question for other JD owners (or anyone else who knows tbh

). There are 4 posts behind the 5 bank drop targets that hold the rubbers either side of the subway scoop. On mine they seem to be a mismatch of different types, 1 single star post, a couple of metal double posts and what looks like a thin metal screw that maybe used to have a star post round it. What do other people have there and what should be there? I'm assuming that there should be double rubbers?
 
There should be 2 sets of double rubbers. Should be clear in the manual for which posts and their positioning.

Cheers guys, mine has definitely been changed in the past then as it's wrong. I'll check the manual and see what I need. No interesting pics at the moment as I'm just working my way through all the bags of bits, cleaning everything

Hopefully I'm not too far off putting it back together as I really want to play it now that the deadworld mod has arrived. Whirlwind makes for a nice break from the cleaning though

These posts are double grooved for 2 rubbers type, when was looking for one for my JD the only result I could find was in Australia, ended up repairing the old one which had snapped in half, authough PPS may now have them in the States.

Thankfully the metal ones are ok on mine. It's the 2 outer ones that were wrong but I've ordered some double star posts that should be perfect. After days of cleaning, I finally got everything done and started re-assembly today. Only had time to start putting the metal back on this evening and have also fitted the playfield light mod that should make the deadworld area look a lot better
