Judge Dredd - Gears in Deadworld motor not working

Hi All, I bought a great JD from a member here around a year ago. It has given me many days and nights of entertainment!! I've had a couple of small issues, but all manageable. However, I've encountered my first major issue which is the gears have stopped working on the Deadworld. I believe it is the classic issue that many will know about (motor runs, gears don't turn) and whilst I've seen some suggested fixes online, I honestly think I would be out of my depth in trying to do it myself. Can anybody suggest sensible avenues for me to get a refurb or new motor? Thanks!

This is the most common fail point I believe and Ken @paddythegreek documented it here.

If you can find a competent engineer / repair person or have the tools yrself and fancy a challenge it’s a very useful guide to follow.

A new motor (improved design) is available from the US but not cheap . £350+ ! But then a few bits of plastic and rubber can soon add up to a couple hundred quid in this hobby so maybe you could use that argument to convince yrself 😁

I’ve repaired 3 of these since I did the log and each time it’s been the gears not the motor.
If you’re brave enough ( or can get someone) to remove the motor/ gearbox unit and send it to me I’ll repair it for £75 inc post back to you. Ken

Hi Ken, this is so kind and I will definitely take you up on the offer. I will PM you to discuss arrangements.

Thanks everyone for the comments and support - this community never fails!

I am sure I have a couple of similar looking Gearboxes from pins I’ve Scrapped in the past and JD is defo one of them as I still have the Apron
I’ll try rake them out as see if anyone recognises them

Hi All,

I thought it was worth a quick update to just let you all know how we have got on with the gearbox so far...

After a couple of messages with Ken I followed his instructions to the letter and the gearbox and motor came out perfectly. It was probably a 25 minute job in total, start to finish. I didn't need many tools. For anyone doing this job, I've actually just taken a photo of everything I took out, in order from left to right and also all the tools I used. I've taken tonnes of photos and videos, so if anyone ever needs them - please let me know!

Anyway, I packaged up the gearbox and sent it off to Ken. Ken has been working on it but, oh no, it's not straightforward. It's the normal issue we all expected but unfortunately somebody has previously fixed it and done a poor job. It's obviously lasted a while as I have had this machine 12 months, but now unfortunately the gears are close to unusable. See photos from Ken.

Anyway, Ken is putting his thinking cap on to consider other solutions but it is very likely that I will have to find a new gearbox. I understand that they may be a bit tricky to find, so I would appreciate any ideas!

Finally, just a massive thanks to Ken for giving this a crack and continuing to persevere!

Jack

If you have anything then please do let me know, as you'll see from my post - I might be in some trouble with the existing gearbox! Cheers, Jack

Hi All, just a quick update to complete this thread. The gears were put back together by Ken who managed to come up with an ingenious solution. I put the machine back together and everything has been running great for the past week. I now have a working deadworld which is fantastic news!

Now just a couple of other little issues to knock over whilst I'm tinkering...

Jack

Just an add on here.
Jacks gearbox had been previously repaired.
God knows who made one complete hack repair job but I suspect they were a relative of Heath Robinson.
So based on this I WILL NOT attempt a repair on any gearbox that has had any repair whatsoever previously.
Jacks repair was 50 yrs engineering experience coupled with a fair amount of luck and unless something else goes my repair(s) will last for the life of the machine. Ken
