I'm just wondering if I'm just over reacting, a product of an older generation? Another Pinsound rant again!

I'm wondering if I'm just overreacting — maybe it's a generational thing — but I feel pretty disappointed right now.

Back in 2023, I uploaded a custom Pinsound pack for Doctor Who. Over several weeks, I stripped down the original sound pack and replaced all 400+ files with some new ones I created in Ableton, later mastering them in Cool Edit and converting everything to stereo. It was no small task. I titled it the 30th Anniversary Edition, as a nod to how long Doctor Who had been running when Bally released the original table.

I shared it freely with the Pinsound community, happy for others to enjoy and use it — as long as I was credited for my work. And for a while, that worked out just fine.

However, I recently came across a release by someone called Simbula who uploaded a pack titled Doctor Who Pinsound Remaster – AI Enhanced Edition (Based on Devorian’s Pack). And here’s where the frustration sets in: I was never contacted, asked, or even informed about this so-called collaboration. In my opinion, the AI-enhanced Doctor voices don't resemble the original characters at all, and the result feels like a misrepresentation — both of my work and of my name.

I reached out to Pinsound to express my concerns. I asked that they encourage creators to act with more integrity and at least consult original authors before building on their work in such a public way. Unfortunately, I’ve been ignored. The hacked version remains and available for download, and I’ve now been effectively shadow-banned from their forum — anything I post has to be manually approved by a moderator, which, let’s face it, means I’ve been silenced.

I understand that by uploading the pack originally, I gave up a certain level of control. But this isn’t about legal rights — it’s about basic respect and courtesy. A simple message to ask if it was OK would have gone a long way.

Since I know Pinsound is active on Pinball Info, I’d genuinely like to hear from them.

If I’m reading this right you spent time and effort creating original new music/sounds then yes, you should feel ****ed off.

It’s just cheeky for someone else to nab it.

From my limited time with a Pinsound it was my understanding that it works similar to open source software where one person builds on another's work.

From the title it seems they are crediting you for the original work, seeing as you created the base pack it would have been nice to recieve a message, but I think its sort of implied by uploading its open for people to make their own improvements (debatable in this case) if they wish.

If a rigid system of permission was in place, it would kind of undermine the whole ethos, as much of the content is derived from pop culture, obtaining permission all the way back from the original rights holders would be a massive task.

Sounds like your version is the definitive one anyway, you have done something great for the community, take it as a compliment they used your version as the source and try not to let it bother you.

I agree with what you're saying, and perhaps if I had been consulted, I could have offered my advice or help. I just find it discourteous to take someone's work and pass it off as your own without getting their approval.

I actually used ElevenLabs to create the voices of the doctors, and they turned out pretty convincing. In this new version, though, the AI voice of Sylvester McCoy sounds pish poor. I don't want people thinking I had any part in this. 😆

I get what your saying, it's easy for me to say don't worry about it, but if it was my hard work I may feel different.
Creating all the doctors voices is pretty darn impressive TBF

I know you created from scratch but most sound packs I checked out in the past "borrowed" a lot from other sources.

Sugesting people obtain permission before sampling others work, on a platform that occupies a grey area where many creators sample big corporations IP (which lets be honestly wouldn't give permission if asked) is not going to make you too popular with the mods tho 😉

i'm sure people will try all options and realise your original is superior, and also see it was uploaded first.

I saw that post on pinside. I don't have pin sound, but I do have a Dr Who, so was interested to hear what it sounded like. I agree that the AI voices sound rubbish, they really sound nothing like the originals and to me lacked a lot of the energy.

Indeed, I took many samples from the public domain that were free of copyright before adding my own effects, etc. I also took samples from the TV series itself — a blatant copyright issue, I know. However, at the first hint of a complaint, the rug would have been pulled. That's acting with integrity — something sadly missing today.

This was actually recorded in stereo, taking the sound directly from the Soundboard. Ignore the Colin Baker segment at the start and skip straight to the game action. Put on a set of headphones if you can.
