Hmm, when you search for these players Keith is number one. Trent is number 35 and John is number 10?

I was always less to believe that the initial numbers were just from the results of the first comps submitted to ifpa, which would make perfect sense. But I can't find any hard evidence of that

Yeah you're basically right Paul. The IFPA existed and was ran by Steve Epstein (Famous for running the Broadway arcade and is in many documentaries about pinball. This is who the Epstein cup is named after). The IFPA promoted pinball and ran 4 major competitions, but then fell by the wayside in the late 90's.
In 2006, Josh Sharpe had the idea of creating a ranking system for competitive pinball and instead of starting from scratch, he approached Steve about taking on the IFPA brand which had already done so much good for promoting pinball. The ranking system was then created and the first task was to back date as many tournaments that they could based on the data and results they had. A lot of those early results are incomplete, but as many results as they could get there hands on from the players at that time were input. And based on the initial ranking system (which is obviously extremely different to the current ranking system!) Elwin was the #1 player in the world after all that data had been input. Hence he is player number 1
