I have a little project it’s a Gottlieb surf side , it’s a none worker and very ropey , but that’s ok as I want to learn how to bring it back to life .
So here is a pic of a relay coil with a extra black wire I think !0ABE67A6-F661-4EB0-BE6B-1AB8F5D7C53C.jpeg
Here is a pic of relay “ I “ cannot find any of the wire’s on the SchematicEF66600B-F295-4D00-A66E-FB3EFA44DF57.jpeg any help where I should be looking for the connections ?

the coil for relay I is shown on your schematic, then elsewhere on the schematic will be the switches that are controlled by relay I - eg coil J circuit has a switch on relay I

Hi Alan the example you gave me was it by looking at number 1 or 2 above .

Ps the Schematics has a playfield glass on top of it so I can draw all over it 😊

I see the circuit for relay 'I' as, L to R, supply/ a normally closed switch on relay 'J'/ four parallel normally open switches, "Left Roto", "Left Center Target", "Left Bottom Rollover" and a switch on Relay 'I'. Though the last of these has a different destination. The two endings of these circuits move off upwards on the drawing.

Re. the additional picture just added, '2' returns via a n/closed motor switch at the motor position '2B', the other branch via an n/c switch at motor '1C'.

That additional wire has been added to a normally open switch on relay 'I', the one shown on the companion relay 'J' is n/closed. Looking further up the diagram i see an N/O contact on relay 'I' shown at one side of the wiper for "Left Advance Unit". There's another near the wiper for "Roto Unit", left of that, across from relay 'H'. And another L/R pair with relay 'J' on the exits from wipers for the "Advance Units" themselves, next up from relay 'L'. There may be others on the lighting side, too.

As a rule with Gottlieb drawings, the further up the solenoid side a component is placed, the more likely it is to be shut off by the Game Over relay, e.g. the flippers are on the very top line, with the coin switches at the lowest on the transformer secondary, if not the primary

Another point with Gottlieb e/m's is the wire insulation. Most original wiring is fabric covered, anything with plastic insulation probably carries mains or 'line' voltage so should be regarded with suspicion.

Also i cannot seem to find all of the colour codes of the wires , I can find some but not all of them , I guess you have to manually trace them around on the machine ?

It does come to that, usually. If you're concerned with that suspicious black wire at the moment, find where it ends up, and check with the drawing to see if that point has a relevance for relay 'I'. It may be a repair (of sorts), or a modification; I recall seeing a 'modernisation' to permanently illuminate bumpers where the marking "1000 Points When Lit" meant just that, When Lit.

The wiring colours are usually all marked on the schematic - if the colour is not right next to the wire, then follow the wire back and you will usually find the colour marked somewhere. Eg all those wires that connect up near your number "2" - the colour is marked further up:

All the ones on the wire diagram I can find ,take the pic of the Actual relay for example A red wire with a trace yellow ( white ? ) or the red and slate wire , just can’t find on the diagram , red could be called maroon but still can’t find them anywhere on the diagram

post good pics (or a pdf) of the whole schematic - lets find them!!!

The black wire has been added at a later date and not showing on the wiring diagram. I believe the diagram matches the switch order, so I would say that the black wire is tapped on to the left center target switch. I and J oppose each other so either one or the other is active. So the black wire is energised when the left center target switch is live and has been activated. I wonder if the additional wire is to add extra credits (making the game freeplay) or add a ball...

unless the black wire is loose it'll be very hard to trace and it's just worth looking for the other end instead... replay counter or add a ball switch would be the first place to see if that's where it terminates. you can continuity test to check that it's the same wire.

That black wire runs along in the bottom of the cab and connects to one of the playfield jones plugs , I’ve actually temp cut it at the moment as it seems not original . I have another wire which doesn’t look original , but I can’t cut that Circuit as that one cuts all coils ,flippers pop bumpers etc .
