HolomodSP - Group Buy (Creature from the black lagoon LCD mod)

I thought there was another option in the pipeline from the guy that developed the animated TZ back screen.
Yeah pinside Compy was working on one using the same system he's used on his TZ/TOM. Far better developer who is actually ethical and stands by his work and will actually support it. He uses the audio bus to trigger events but holoMod used lamp matrix (but think swapped to audio bus as well in the end?)

Oh interesting do you have a link?

And the rest. 10 years

I had a pindmd3 as well. That worked well actually.
Of course, pinDMD was designed with love of pinball and to offer something new to the virtual pinball experience back in the day not just to make $$$ off the pinball community! :)

He had an artist draw them from scratch but I seriously doubt any of them are licensed @Planetary Pinball

Why is it everybody thinks that Planetary Pinball are the gatekeepers to every IP license, ever created in the history of mankind?

They have the rights to use Bally and Williams trademarks (for pinball machines) only. Nothing else.

CFTBL is a Universal Monsters IP owned by Universal. It may be the case that if all of the animations in the videos are created and drawn by him or his artist and there are no trademarks used then then he doesn't need a license from either party. The film footage of Creature though seems a grey area as apparently the original trailer is now considered Public Domain because it was released in 1954. If he's lifted other footage from the film then that's more complicated and may need a license from Universal, but regardless Planetary haven't got so much as a look in here.

Anyway, I can't believe people on here are openly talking about ripping off the mod this guy made. Jeez.

Sorry did not realise mentioning Rick was such a taboo around here, I have amended my post.

Hi @Paul,

Can you lock this thread. Looks like no one is interested. I'll be the guinea pig and just buy it myself. :)

Sorry man I wasn't having a go at you in particular, it's just a common talking point I see posted around various forums. More so the other post about this mod maker being a scammer just because he's charging for video content (which may not actually infringe on anyone's rights).

I've yet to see what rights that they actually have.... Despite asking a number of times.... always good to be honest and open...

I've had first hand experience here. They do actually have the rights from WMS to use the Bally and Williams trademarks for pinball products (not for video games or slot machines), which includes doing a kind of sub-license deal with anyone who wants to make parts with those trademarks. The trademarks are registered and valid in both the UK and throughout Europe so anyone using them without a license can technically end up in jail if pursued.

But the reason why PPS don't make parts for so many games (like Johnny Mnemonic, Flintstones, Demo Man etc) is because they don't have the 3rd party licenses for those. There are often multiple licenses in place, multiple studios or publishers, including the right use an actors face or likeness and for this reason nearly all IP / Movie type games will never, ever have parts remade that are 'fully licensed' and 100% legit. It's either impossible to get the rights to them all or not financially viable.

Almost every product that CPR sells for example is unlicensed. They have the right to use Bally and Williams trademarks under PPS but that's it, they don't have the Data East license, or Star Wars, Star Trek, Playboy etc. Same goes for Classic Arcades, Pinball Centre, Ministry of Pinball etc, all the rest. It's all unlicensed. So it's kinda cringe when people on forums start screaming "OMG this random mod maker is uNliCeNsEd!!!!111!1".

Thx that's interesting to know,
I guess we live in a world where licenses mean nothing by the sounds of it.

I am not saying pinballSP is a scammer because of the videos copying Williams artwork (still think this is a grey area as its so close to the Williams art), if you order this mod you will receive it, but if it breaks good luck getting it fixed. My main annoyance is his absolute disregard to any one elses work, ie takes what he wants and never credits anyone for it, Then to make it worse goes around crying everyone copies him! Not a dev I would want to support personally. Appreciate no one else has made this mod yet so if you want it this is your only option....

Fair point that's major hypocrisy right there.

At the end of the day though, most of us are just looking for cool stuff for our games to enjoy them more. if you want his mod, I think you should buy it. You're not gonna get sent to hell ;)
