Wonder if anyone can advise on how to acquire a decent quality pub pool table? Trying to help a mate find one… no idea on where to look and what to look out for.

Any advice or recommendations welcome.

Thank you

Like most things it depends on budget and circumstances.

There are basically two types. The commercial type (including tournament) with a coin mech or home which is free play and will always return the white ball.
Both have slate beds. Some may argue the point here but a good quality home table with a slate bed is fine for most casual
pool playing.

There are also American and UK tables. American tables have bigger pockets. probably best to avoid.

For a really good table at reasonable price when there is an international ( or high level ) tournament new tables will be supplied
and at the end of the tournament they will be sold on as used. This would require patience and a bit of reasearch.

If you are looking a budget used table then FB marketplace / gumtree is your friend. But you have to be 'on the ball' to get a bargain.
Most tables would require a recloth which could be approx £150- £350 approx depending if you are getting the table collected and delievered as an included service.
Get a quote for this service before shaking hands on a used table.
It should be factored in as part of price negotiation. This can also transform a tired looking table as the new cloth can be from a range of colours.
light Grey is quite common now.

If it's a home table and there are going to be young kids playing a recloth might be better put off for a while.

Something to look for in a used table. If it has a good cloth but has been in a conservatory or room with natural light the cushion rubbers
can be damaged by UV. This leaves 'dead' cushions with no bounce. A quick test is to place your thumb on the side of the table grip the the
cushion and squeeze cushion. If the rubber is really perished you can feel it cracking. playing th white ball off the cushions should give a feel
for how the cushions are.

Might worth nipping into your local pub and if theres a table you like the look and see if they fancy selling it.
With a bit of luck they might have been thinking of a getting a fresh one. If so the table probably has made it's money
and may be bought quite cheaply

Checking in Local snooker /pool clubs is an option also.
