freeplay roms

You don't need it. Just set the replay score to the lowest it will go (normally 10K points on Bally's) then add 40 credits on (max you can add) and you're done :thumbs:

But if you do want the ROMs, because they also add a few little rule changes and enable a bunch of unused speech samples, then I do believe both @Paul and @myPinballs can burn you some ROMs.

The "freeplay" on the custom ROMs is a simple hack. There is a tiny tweak to the code such that the credit counter never goes below 1. Cunning ;)

If you want to see the changes have a look at the new ruleset: http://www.pinball4you.ch/okaegi/pro_softvector.html. The ROM images, v5 and v10, are available here: http://www.pinball4you.ch/okaegi/pro_soft.html

many thanks i reckon freeplay roms are the best way:) now to find paul:thumbs:

That's great info @Nedreud , I didn't know those roms were available.

I wonder why there were so many unused speech phrases, memory was expensive stuff back in 1982!

i read somewhere there was a problem with v10 perhaps its been fixed:)

I've got v5 in my VECTOR. No problems that I can tell. As far as I can make out the v10 version only adds a new option to control a speech setting and a new skillshot on the left in-lane by re-assigning the 4 DIP switches normally used for the 3rd coin slot as follows:

dip switches 17,18,19,20 have new meaning, , coin 3 uses same switches as cooin 2 (dip 1- 8)
17 = on -> Start player one is "Hi I m I pac", start player two is "Welcome to vectordrome"...
17 = off -> Sometimes (50 %) start player one is "Welcome to vectordrome", player two is "Hi I'm I pac"
18 = off -> new skillshoot enables in left inlane for x y z targets (8 6 3 seconds)
18 = on -> no new skillshot

The quote "defender down" is replaced by "stand by for vectorscan" sometimes (50 %)

Actually, now that I read a little more thoroughly, the v10 ROM is still on beta testing as isn't actually available yet. It also looks as though the guy has exceeded the 8K limit on the v10 ROM and had to build a custom adapter to hack in a 16K ROM!

So, for the time being, just stick with the v5 version. Not having the above features isn't a disaster!

already asked paul he's doing some for NLP, and then some for peeps that cant make it.
how do they work you just install rom then turn on pinball?:hmm:

Are you going to NLP, @rockhouse? If so, would be nice to meetup and talk VECTOR!

As for the ROMs, no, you can't just replace the original chips. There are a set of option jumpers on the board that have to be configured correctly for the type of ROM/EEPROM chips. The "jumpers" are actually solder points on the MPU and need to be connected with soldered wires or cut to break an existing connection.

Here's the MPU from my GOLD BALL with all the numbered "E" jumper points marked (note I've got a 2532 EEPROM for U2 and a 2732 for U6):

To make it easier to switch between different ROM/EEPROM configurations I soldered 0.1" headers pins to all the "E" points and then use jumpers cables to make the appropriate settings:

The jumper configuration needed depends on the type of ROMs/EEPROMs. I use this reference table:

http://techniek.flipperwinkel.nl/ballyss/rep/index3.htm#35roms

Basically, you need to do a bit of soldering on your board. If you're only ever going to use the MPU in GOLD BALL and don't think you'll ever swap back to the original ROMs then make the connections permanent, else you'll have to do something similar to what I did.

If you're really stuck or not confident making the changes you can post the board to me and I'll do the jumper conversion for a bit of "beer money". Good thing is I'll be able to test the board is working perfectly by dropping it in my VECTOR. All proceeds will go to the Bally Solid-State Preservation Society. In other words will be used to keep my knackered old project pins going ;)

Of course you're more than welcome to drop in if you're ever passing Guildford/Aldershot way...

you never know your bad luck :eek:
if you see an old fart out of breath carrying a vector pinball on his back
give him a cuppa:rofl:
