Looks like Stern aren't doing this after all... also seems that Franchi has had a falling out with Stern...

He's so good at what he does. Makes it so obvious that other artists blaming the licensors for ****ty artwork are making excuses.

Question, how would they get permission / licence for using Christopher Reeve's likeness, or indeed for anyone who has passed away on a machine?

They probably do it retrospectively im guessing?

Yeah they would get permission with the Reeve estate (ie the legal entity that looks after things like this, and probably largely governed by his surviving relatives)

Best person to speak to about licensing is Andy Heighway i hear..

Suspect that during that time Reeve included that in the deal to be in the movie so no additional permission needed...

Superman is too big an icon to have any ****ing about with that sort of permission.

Neil.

Licensing is different nearly every time. I've heard Roger Sharpe talk about it and it's all a matter of following the trail til you find out out what belongs to who and then making deals. Modern licensing is a nightmare especially apparently.

From the podcast Franchi stated it had the same fate as Beetlejuice... Gomez said it wasn't a title the teams at Stern could get behind or get excited about...

If so Gomez is clearly off his head... They make Munsters but can't get behind Superman... MADNESS!!!!!

If it’s a still from the film then it would be an easy license. (Well relatively easy). If it’s a drawing from the film it become more complex.

Dealing with an estate can be problematic. I had a cover of a T. rex song being used in a Jim Carey movie. Getting permission from Marc Bolan’s estate was the hardest part of the deal. Seriously they got 20k just from signing their name but couldn’t be ****d.

Wasn’t it BTTF and Hook that they couldn’t get the image rights for?

I’m also always a bit cynical when people claim a license is too expensive for pinball. Even at a rate of say $500 a game (which I suspect is massively above the going rate) how much is this compared to the build cost? I didn’t clock Black Knight being cheaper than star wars.

Back on topic the art looked great but how much interest is there in an old superman movie? It’s a classic comic theme but does anyone under 40 care about the film? (Admittedly I feel the same about the camp batman game) 😉

The gist of the Pinside thread is that Franchi did this stuff off his own back, took it to Stern who said they weren't interested, and he's offended by that for some reason?

Isn't it usually the other way around? Stern commission an artist to do work after they've decided on a theme?

1978 saw Superman at the flicks and playing the game too - it was a very good year🦸‍♂️
