EPC 2025 - Austria - 29th May to 1st June

Awesome event so far, and a lot of great results for the UK contingent! Top coverage too on JDL Pinball with Jim, Dina, @Kate Rothwell-Jackson, Richard and @Genotime providing commentary and putting in the work to keep the rigs moving throughout the event. This is what I've seen so far (Apologies if I've missed anything)...

Day 1 (Wednesday)

The beloved Ulf Rokkan ruled day 1, making it to the Finals of the Warm Up tournament. Placing him top 24 in a field of around 228 players, an incredible result and one likely to push Ulf right up into the upper end in the UK rankings. @Taxiturn found himself just under the cut line at 29th, an equally impressive finish :)

Day 2 (Thursday)

In Main, the Aw bros (@Genotime and @Jackpot) dominated, both securing a top spot in their qualification groups and earning themselves a bye into the Round of 64 in Main Finals

And in Classics, @Jackpot went one step further and secured another top spot in Group A which will give him a free trip to the Round of 32 in Classics Finals

Day 3 (Friday)

In Main, @Moonraker and Jim took 2nd in their qualification groups to secure their place in the Finals, and Josh took 1st for a free trip into the Round of 64 alongside Gene and Yuen.

In Classics, Josh also secured himself a spot in Finals.

@Kate Rothwell-Jackson narrowly missed out on Women's finals in a very well played Bad Cats tiebreaker, taking 5th overall.

Day 4 (Saturday so far)

A brutal Magna Drain (Coach @Taxiturn's reaction in the background says it all) on Game 7 of 7 today contibuted to a Round of 32 finish for Yuen, with Gene exiting in the same round in a tough matchup against Bart Volman. My hopes were high for an Aw v Aw Quarterfinal showdown, but nonetheless a solid result for both!

Josh has made his way to the Round of 16 against a tough opponent in Wilfred Johnsen, who had some great games against Viggo in the Finals of the Warm Up tournament.

Honorable mentions

Local hero Gareth got some stream time (With his good friend, Gene, on commentary), playing two consecutive games of Iron Maiden against rivals Josh Iles and Richard Rothwell-Jackson in what might go down as the fastest 6-balls in the history of competitive Iron Maiden. Not playing quite as kind as the one down at Ginhaus.

Also ongoing is the JJP Highscore tournament, where as you'd expect, both Josh and Yuen are sitting comfortably in the upper end of the standings.

The country/team tournament is starting shortly, and as it runs alongside the classics, we will be missing those playing in those final rounds. So, Simon Love, conrad chambers and myself have taken 3 of the 4 places, with the 4th place being fought for between 3 players: Roy Smith, Gareth Arnold and James Aw. Game = medieval madness. Player order decided by a papa approved* method of 'how many fingers am i holding up behind my back'. James guessed correctly so he was player 3. Roy played first, Gareth second.
James put up a cracking 18m on his first ball, a score which neither Roy nor Gareth could catch, so James takes the 4th spot and merrily got to plunge his 3rd ball.
Congrats James!

Really great summary Brad. Hopefully we will see you out here with us one of these times! I just lost 3-2 to Johannes Ostermeier to be knocked out in the last 32 of classics after a brutal draw as the number 2 seed. Was up 2-1 after winning an epic game of bad cats, chasing down his 28M on ball 3 when I was on 6M... sadly he then dominated on Radical and I didn't have the luck on future spa which I chose on game 5.

So close but yet so far.

Definitely hope to get out to one of these bigger European tournaments next year, looks great. I thought the same on that draw, hurts to get a bye that leads you right into Johannes but you gave him a good game by the looks of it. Shame we didn't get to see that Bad Cats on stream, those left ramp loops are a fun time when they get going.

Unfortunately we struggled in the team tournament and Germany won 6-1, Kate and Conrad got a split flipper win on Creature but otherwise it was tough sledding against a really highly ranked German team.

Highlight was James getting 30m ball 1 on Deadpool in the 4 balls, straight after Paul Englert had a house ball. Kid can play!

Having such a good time out here, great tournament 👌

You played really well mate, shocker of a draw, but to take Johannes to a decider is as close as it gets. I know you'll be disappointed but great performance 👏

I can't believe you chose Future Spa 😅

If you were playing johannes you would understand why. The only games he is beatable on is games where i could back myself to beat him shooting one shot.

Any other controllable game he destroys it, I needed some randomness to have a hope of winning as no other simple games were left

Get yourself to Pinfest, the UK Open then EAPO! We'll need your support ☺️

On the train back to the airport now. This was a great event - so well organised, loads of techs, huge free play area and all of the comps started on time even if they didn’t quite finish on time - but you can blame that on the top players picking Bores of Fury over and over and playing it forever 🙂 the atmosphere was also super friendly and nice to spend time hanging out with the UK contingent and others too.

Very happy with my performance in the side tournaments, I had final game “win and in” shots to qualify in both the warmup (29th/240) and the classics (29th/96 in my group) but unfortunately came 3rd in both. Ended up 72nd/279 in the JJP hybrid after spending a solid long day and a half queuing and playing entries. Only blot was a brutal morning in the main, I started 1/8 but then pulled it back and won 5 of my last 7. Six wins was only good for 13th/16 in my group.

Good luck to Josh and Yuen who are both in the JJP finals this afternoon!

To echo the words of others - an absolutely brilliant event. Facilties, seating, organisation, timings, game setup in both Main and JJP, food readily available, drinks and bar, supermarket next door, friendly atmosphere, numerous side events and huge free play area. The only improvement point was possibly classic game selection/setup as I agree this was not fun to watch as the elite players were just too good for some of the games (Radical/Swords)

Quickly wanted to highlight a few outstanding performances in addition to the already mentioned:

Richard Rothwell-Jackson tied for a qualifying spot in Main with an outstanding 9 wins - he was unlucky to lose the playoffs on Getaway to advance to the playoffs.

Roy Smith finished 5/16 in his qualifying group, with 8 wins, above Austria number one Markus Stix! This result will launch Roy up the UK rankings, an excellent effort.

Martyn Iles finished a strong 44th of 280 players in the JJP comp - aided by two great games on the Hobbit.

Finally my proudest moment of the weekend was when my son James was drawn against Johannes Ostermeier in a Classics matchup on Bally Atlantis. James had a blinding ball 1 - starting the multiball and hitting the jackpot shot and it was enough to finish ahead of the eventual classics champion on that game.

Apparently Johannes was overheard saying: "How come this kid knows how to hit the targets and I f-ing can't..." 😀

An absolutely brilliant few days spent in good company with the UK gang. Thank you to all those who kindly helped watch out for James as well and played some friendly games with him - he was in good spirits the whole time which made the experience even better. Sincerely appreciate it!
