Ebay Auctions

:) it would have to be a rather large ring for it to be illegal, as it would have to be a high percentage of the potential pinball buying public.
Also i would not go on hotuk deals as your gonna have a fit

Also Rus121, thank you for compiling the sold list

Yeah missed that one. It most certainly does look like a shill as there is no way the previous bidder knew to place a £995 bid after only a £400 one before it. Removed from the list.

Oh, the Woz, once again, looks to have been shilled. The last genuine 'looking' bid, was £5500.
The seller using the 'Peter Fenton' account is a regular shiller (in my opinion) and all auctions from that account should be avoided.

Was going to say this seemed a bit optimistic at asking price £1750 (esp. with an unmentioned credit dot):

WILLIAMS GETAWAY HIGH SPEED 2 RARE PINBALL MACHINE | eBay

But looks like it sold already, admittedly to a "Best Offer" rather than full price, but I can't see a seller taking a 1k offer so soon as its listed and I couldn't see anyone offering more than 1200-1300 even for a supermint Getaway.

What are you talking about??? This is a thread to discuss pinball related Ebay listings. There is nothing dodgy going on here!

One of the original postings said that info should be shared to avoid people bidding against each other and raising the price. It is exactly that which is illegal. I really do not care, but the site admin might want to watch their backs

Its got a faded cab too, how is that supermint?

Sorry, that was more me commenting on the absolute max you'd expect to pay for a perfect example, although the seller
Was bigging it up quite a bit.

I especially liked the now standard "RARE" claim... So rare that you only see a couple for sale each month ;-)

And since when as HS2 been rare?

I think i've seen at least 2 or 3 listed in the past 4-6 weeks. I don't consider it a rare table, but it is jolly good fun to play.

This is 1stop Pinball, are you sure? Anyone have good/bad reports from him, for future ref?

That post was an opinion. Opinions are generally accepted in any western forum so long as they don't slander others, incite hatred, or harass. Just in case you didn't realise.

I know not of 1stoppinball being involved, but that account always has auctions that sell and then re-appear along with suspicious looking bids. This is of course, only my opinion, but look at the past history from that account and you will see suspicious bidding activity along with relisted, previously sold machines. In other words, the auctions on that account could be regularly shilled for the sole purpose of price pushing imo.

Besides, people discussing among themselves as to an item's worth and advising others on what is or is not a fair price is most certainly not illegal. Exactly which law has been contravened, Grahambute? As I struggle through my law degree I'm sure this could be the thesis I'm looking for.

Don't want to put a damper on things, but think it is actually illegal to create a ring to artificially keep auction price down.

It is certainly immoral, the only fair price for any object is what a willing buyer is prepared to pay a willing seller.

Think Administrators need to investigate this, I did a quick check on Wikipedia and can confirm IT IS ILLEGAL in the UK.

No idea what you are talking about. Think you have somehow got your flippers crossed!!

I'll take my chances in court, I clearly set out to start a pinball price depreciation ring :p

So friends who go to an auction house together and see something they both (or all 3 or 4 of them) like decide that only one of them bids and the others will share in it afterwards is Illegal? So being FRIENDLY is now ILLEGAL?

Call the police (seriously)

As the 3rd admin to comment, GrizZ and mufcmufc being the other two.
I do not know of any law that stops friends letting each other know they were bidding on something so other mates can decide to not enter into a bidding war with them.
There is nothing to stop people bidding against each other, and the Admins on this site take no responsibility either way.
I am a bit unsure how this could be interpreted as entering into a price fixing ring either. Any suggestions of what something is worth is based on people opinions and a valuation is also not illegal, especially when it can be backed up by the sort of experience some of these people have.

Now if someone thought that the actions of this site were harming their financial interests, they could bring that to the attention of the Admins who could then consider if the request to stop that damage was legitimate. After that I would expect to receive some form of a cease and desist. To the best of my knowledge we have not received either of those and therefore I am not concerned about my back. In this case, it would have to come from eBay or an class action from eBay pinball sellers.

As an aside, this site and thread does a lot to promote eBay items as it does to protect our users who use eBay. It also supports using the correct channels to make a complaint to eBay when activity is considered unfair such as shill bidding. eBay isn't just about the sellers, it is about the buyers too, if you don't have them then no-one will sell anything.

I think the immoral, illegal practices you refer to are where a ring of powerful bidders agrees to not bid against each other so to keep an auction price low, and then holds a closed, secret re-auction of the item between themselves, sharing out the 'profit' between members. It's shill bidding in reverse and (IMO) very wrong. See Wikipedia Marks & Co for an example.

I can't imagine you'll find any instances of that sort behaviour anywhere in these pages - personally I'm not going to wade through looking for one.

Good luck in your auction for Silverball Mania - I'm sure you'll get a fair price for it on ebay, and I'm equally sure no one in this group is conspiring to prevent that.

Would you really have bothered to comment on any of this if you weren't selling a rare and valuable Silverball Mania pinball machine? I think not.

What is really laughable about all this is that with your 'jobsworth' attitude you will probably have conspired to make everybody on here avoid your listing like the plague thereby driving down the price yourself

Btw why is it private bidders only, doing a spot of shill bidding are we?
