So there's a knackered Tales from the Crypt on eBay at the moment which a friend is considering. It's relatively local so well within driving distance for us to go and take a look at. But they're asking £995 for a non-working machine which currently doesn't even power up. It could be a simple case of fitting new fuse holders and powering it up before checking everything else, but until the fuse holders are done there's no guarantee that it's not something more complex.

My plan is to go over and take a look with my friend but i'd appreciate feedback from folks on here.

Questions I have are :

What would a fully working example of this table go for?
Are there any specific things I should be looking for? Damage around holes and ramps are a given as is checking the launch mechanism.
Any views on what kind of money we should be offering in it's current state?

Thanks

Pete

Personally, I would not pay anywhere near 1K for a non-working TFTC. I sold a nice, fully working one of these earlier this year for less than that. It's one of my all time favourite games but, as it's a Data East, they do tend to be a lower price than most DMD games. That one has no topper, doesn't work and is missing parts. - The seller doesn't specify which parts are missing either. I would not pay any more than 600 for something like that. And even that might be too much.
Just my opinion of course.
Great game though!

That is great advice for the weary for TFTC. It might be a simple fix but when you add up what is required, it certainly is no where near a bargain. Take a look by all means and let them know your concerns but if people are already showing interest on eBay then they will not accept such a low offer.

It's been on eBay for absolutely ages and they just keep relisting it.

He said the two previous offers were rejected but that he told them to come and view before making any offer. Maybe he's just keen to get his max return by completing the deal outside of eBay (thus avoiding their fees).

We'll go and take a look but I agree with Rus that I wouldn't pay more than £500 for it.

Check the 2 ramp gate/switch assemblies are there - one of them, cant remember which, is a b*tch to find if missing. Check the door knocker launch latch thingie is functional - again, very hard to source replacement - hence you often see TFTC with bodged replacement buttons for the launch.

As others have said this is def a *project*, sounds to me like a dead game that has been robbed of parts. If you want a project and aren't too worried about a few quid being lost then 500 max ......if you are watching the pennies then I wouldn't take the risk unless its cheap, cheap, cheap. But considering the guy has repeatedly listed it I suspect he is holding out for silly money.

Thanks for the feedback on the TTFC guys. If my friend pulls it off then there will a Shop Log opening shortly. For my part i've agreed to help him out with the project.

Would be great to have another pin in the area to play.

Some auction results from the last two weeks ish: There were a couple more but looked suspicious (possible shills) so I omitted them from the results. Of course, some of these auction bids could be shills too so take them with a pinch of salt.

Thanks Rus. Handy information to have.

A knackered Star Wars project is on there at the moment and due to finish in the next hour. That's looking like it'll probably end up just under the £500 mark but i'm pretty sure that SW is a more desirable theming than the TTFC. I reckon the £400-ish (up to £500 max) is about right for this one.

My mate has already texted the guy to try to get a viewing in the next night or two.

That knackered one on the bay right now is buggered beyond belief. Even at £500, it could end up costing the earth to fix up. Would be a great way to learn the ways of Data East though so if your enthusiastic enough it could be worth it in the end.

I'd appreciate your comments Rus and what makes you say it's buggered beyond belief?

My thoughts:

1. The mention of electrical burning would suggest that at the very least it's going to need a replacement PSU or work doing on the power supply board.
2. He's mentioned missing bulbs and rubbers. Not a big deal as my friend will most likely be fitting LEDs anyway. In the meantime i've got a lot of standard bulbs that I ripped out of my R&B when I converted that to LED lighting.
3. No guarantees on ANY of the boards. I have an R&B so I believe that I could actually test the CPU board using my current R&B power supply. Similarly the other boards could also be tested the same way.
4. Missing brackets and coils. Hard to say until we view the table. The odd coil here or there should be replacable but I know of at least one coil (upper flipper) which is unique to this table and thus hard to source. It's a lower rated coil deliberately to avoid the targets being hammered to hell.

I've done a fair bit of work on my R&B in the last 6 months and i'm more than happy to help my mate out on this one. Would be nice to see a buggered table restored to it's former glory, especially if the cab and playfield is in as good condition as they're suggesting.

Guess a lot will depend on the viewing and how hard it is to release their grip on the table without paying the stupid money.

Aaaah right, that would make sense. Went for £537 in the end. Ouch - that's a lot for a non-working pin.

The burning smell from the TFFC is a little worrying. He mentions a new transformer being fitted but that wouldn't help if there's a problem with the PSU board in the backbox. Lots of questions to ask when we go to view now.

From my experience, and I have had a fair few project pins over the years, the transformers are the last thing to ever give much grief. Never had to replace one. So alarm bells ring a bit on that front.

Don't forget to factor in the new dmd you may well need also.

Thanks everyone. I'll be sure to report back.

I guess I can test the old DMD on my R&B as they should be interchangable?

Ref the tales from the crypt.

I had a chat with him, he started at (and said he wanted) 800 quid. I didnt continue from that point on, as I didnt think it was be possible to get him down to it's value to me.

Thanks abaxas.

Not sure where you're based but in our case it could be the fact we're local may help. If he really insists on sticking to £800 then he's got no chance and we'll happily walk away.

My mate has cash waiting so he'll take it along and he could take the machine there and then. So it's up to the seller really. Did you bother going to view it?

The seller said "Give me your money"
The Black Knight replied ... "No way"

It's 2hours+ from me, if he'd been more malleable on the phone I would have visited but wasn;t going on what I thought was a waste of time.

TBH, if he's been talking 650. I would have taken some cash out and driven down.

My mind cat see 800>450 but it can 640>450.

Am I confused but is Peterfenton from eBay, Benjamin Boxall from the Yahoo group? Or is this our own PeterFenton who is our friend Jon?

I know both of them and they're good friends. Jon Mel (aka PeterFenton) is 1stoppinball and will be selling this on Ben's behalf. Oh and remember it was offered on the yahoo group but obviously no deal was struck despite the amount of interest there was in it.

That DE Star Wars was knackered and worth about £200. No doubt it will be back on soon. The TFTC, i offered him £500, then £350...
