DIY lighting mod

So I bought this led lighting strip from China about6 weeks ago and it finally arrived today. It runs off 6V apparently and takes 4 AA batteries. Apologies for the newbie question but would it be feasible for me to rip the battery box off and solder on some crocodile clips to hook it up to the GI circuit? I'm no electrician clearly but I can solder. Is this a good or bad idea?20170113_213828.jpg
 
Dont think it's great... Depends on the current Draw.... however it does run off batteries...

Personally i would say put a meter in series in the +ve line, set your meter to Amps, and see what it draws....
 
You could use a 7805 voltage regulator to drop the commonly used 12v down to 5v. That will be DC so shouldn't flicker. Depending on the current draw you may need to mount it on a heat sink.
 
Thanks for all the tips guys. I finally got around to installing it tonight. Decided to just leave it battery powered in the end. The battery box (4 AA) with its on/off switch rests inside the cabinet within easy reach from the coin door. The lighting colours and modes switch is underneath at the front. I've got to say, I'm so happy with this diy mod, its bloody brilliant! And all for £6 including postage from China!! I'll see if I can upload a video...
 
Buying stuff under £20 with free postage is great from sites like DHgate, banggood.com, aliexpress etc... You can go nuts buying lots of little things from different sellers as you will pay zero VAT on stuff under £20.

It is really easy to get it to switch on and off with the game. Just add a 12v relay with the 12v supplied by the game.

When the game is powered on the 12v from the game energises the relay and it will switch on the mod.

I think I'm going to look at a more integrated solution when the batteries have died. My brain goes to mush when it comes to electronics and with all the other stuff I'm learning at the moment I don't have the time to investigate it to a comfortable level unfortunately. I have fitted lighting mods directly to the boards on my TAF and also crocodile clipped to the GI but I'm not sure where to start on a Gottlieb System 3.
