Well everything had been fine for the past year and UPS is normally super reliable and professional. Proper drivers to pick up. Dhl bought Uk Mail and started using ‘man in car’ pickups, so hmmmmm....

Like I said previously I just don’t need all this additional ****e... I’m not a massive company with endless resources and a ‘brexit’ department...

Not sure I understand your logic on how small businesses suffer exactly, at least not in the UK. This system has been put in place to prevent UK businesses from being disadvantaged by competition from VAT free imports (as well as closing a loophole for the treasury.)

Business to business sales not exceeding £135 in value will also be subject to the new rules. However, where the business customer is VAT registered in the UK and provides its valid VAT registration number to the seller, the VAT will be accounted for by the customer by means of a reverse charge. (Copied from https://www.gov.uk/government/publi...s-goods-sold-to-customers-from-1-january-2021)

Reverse charge VAT is how goods imported from the EU have been accounted for as long as I can remember so in reality very little has changed for small businesses. (Coming from the owner of a small business that has just received a consignment without issue from the EU this week.)

If you want to import consignments from anywhere in the world valued less than £135 without issue then start a VAT registered business, import the goods and then sell them to yourself at cost. It costs £12 to incorporate a company with Companies House online, and then £13 a year to file a company return, barely more then you would of paid Royal Mail etc for a single import in admin fees! Import 2 items in a year and you've actually saved money. Otherwise I'm sure there are plenty of small businesses in the UK that will source what you want if you ask them.
How does this save money. You'd need to charge vat to sell them to yourself....

There seems to be a bigger issue exporting goods from the UK at the moment then importing and I do have sympathy Jim and others that are having difficulty getting goods to their customers. I'd also recommend giving DHL a go instead as UPS clearly don't seem to be on the ball at all. The goods I imported last week came via DHL with no delay whatsoever. They phoned me up on the day of delivery to ask for our EORI number and said they would keep the details on file so they didn't need to ask again in the future. The goods had already been loaded on a van by this stage anyway so I get the impression they just wanted to get the stuff delivered regardless.

Yes you'd have to charge VAT to sell the goods to yourself but you always had to pay VAT before anyway, so ulltimately you break even on the VAT. There is potential to save money on imports from countries outside of the EU though because previously you would of been charged VAT by the courier PLUS a £10 administration/processing fee or similar amount for the privelege. As a VAT registered customer they don't need to charge any VAT and hence no admin fee. Realistically I don't really recommend doing this unless you are importing a whole load of stuff because of the burden of the paperwork and filing involved, it's not a crazy amount but can take a little bit of time to get your head around if you haven't done it before. The point I was trying to get accross is that the new rules don't shaft UK businesses importing goods like some people on here are trying to make out.

Under the new rules the whole world is treated the same so there is actually a benefit to VAT registered companies importing goods from countries outside of the EU as they no longer have to pay VAT at the point of import. Take Phil importing pinball machines from the USA for example, previously everytime he imported a container of games he had to pay the VAT due on the whole consignment before it was released from customs. The new rules mean that this VAT payment can just be deferred in to his next VAT return by which time a large amount of the games will have been sold to customers and the VAT collected. This avoids a significant negative effect on cash flow.

In all honesty I don't really agree with HMRC placing the burden on foreign businesses to collect VAT on their behalf as really it's out of their jurisdiction and it definitely sucks for the average punter who just wants to buy stuff. Unfortunately it seems that it isn't just the UK that is looking to implement such policy, we just happen to be leading the charge. Brexit may have brought this forward slightly but this is the way things were going to end up regardless so it's an easy scapegoat imo.

Interesting point. So purely to avoid the admin charge. Got it ,.

The issue for me appears to be 'Stanford Le Hope' processing centre and uk customs and border officials. Maybe other couriers are using other places where its working better, god knows. And lets remember here, these are exports to non EU countries, so nothing should have changed.... Frictionless trade though people....

This is what UPS say (and yes all my export paperwork is perfect as it always is)

"
Our records indicate that your shipment is on hold awaiting customs clearance. Please note that Customs and Border Protection is an entirely separate entity based upon government procedures.

At the moment, there is nothing pending or required, unfortunately we do not have an estimated timeframe for the clearance, as that is entirely to the discretion of customs officials and is beyond our control. It shows that the package will be delivered on 28/01/21, by end of day. Please keep continue to track the package in our website, ups.com.
"

So a parcel shipped on 7th Jan 2021 will not be with the customer until 28th Jan at the earliest when using a 3 day max international service.

The issue i have now is changing logistics processes and using other couriers that i dont have a relationship with or trust is not that easy. As i said before i'm not a massive company and i dont have other peoples to sort this stuff out. All the things i mentioned before christmas as being a potential issue for me and guess what, exactly correct....

I'm thinking of selling up and moving to another country! ...
