Being of an age where I'm now partial to Radio 4 (though not far enough gone to enjoy The Archers), I can report that the feature 'listeners favourite sounds', which airs just before the 6 p.m. news, featured the game-start sound from Williams 'Defender' last week. I'd wondered if any R4 listener would nominate an arcade game sound effect, and what it would be.

Not sure if this counts, but the sound of a jackpot's worth of coins being spat out of a fruit machine. Not that I play them, but it has a certain rattle to it that sounds quite satisfying 
Defender takes some beating.
"Stop the humanoid! Stop the Intruder!" "Intruder Alert! Intruder Alert!"

Indeed. Love that game.
So many of that era games had the best sounds and hearing them just takes you back to 1982 ....shovelling 10p's into Gorf, Vanguard , Missile Command etc ...happy days
