CV end of ball/trough problems

I have a problem with my CV. When I get an end of ball in play the machine fires every ball onto the playfield. If I loose a ball within the ball save time I just get the one ball back as normal.
Multi ball modes are also ok.
It just happens when the ball goes out of play and it calculates the bonus etc.
The trough optos seem to work ok in test mode and I have taken the trough and the boards off and cleaned the optos.
Before I replace optos or the board, might it be anything else?
Cheers Adie

Def sounds like a 'lost ball' scenario. If not in the trough then maybe one of the other 'holding' areas is a bit flaky. I can't remember on CV where balls are locked/held etc. Up on the wireform aren't they. Maybe check them all - switch test , activate them, bang on the table near them, see if any showing as intermittant maybe.

Can someone with a CV test something for me please? With 3 balls in the trough in test switch edges mode, press the left ramp exit switch and it momentarily registers trough ball 4 then left ramp exit, it only does it when the 4th ball is not in the trough, not sure if it is a problem or normal but could be related to my issue.

Hi Adie,

Have you sorted this yet ?

Not sure what you mean by 'left ramp exit' as there is no switch called that on CV - what's the number?
Though, if closing one switch causes others to show, then that's not normal and indicates a problem - possibly a short somewhere.

Cheers

Sorry, not sorted yet, been on hols. It is switch 45 left ramp made, it is on the acrobat ramp, this switch was missing so I replaced it and although it seems to work I do get the ball trough show with a ball out of the trough, maybe I have made a mistake wiring the switch?

Just had a look and I had wired the switch the wrong way around, it fixes the problem. I played a few games and it does not seem to be throwing any balls out but will keep my eye on it.

Cool.
Seems a bit redundant that switch anyway, since just hitting the switch at the bottom of the acrobat ramp counts as making the shot - or maybe that's just my settings. Will have to take a look.

I had a good go on it tonight, it did throw one ball out it shouldn't have (thought it needed a ball save but I still had it in play) I let it drain and no other ball faults.
It does seem to behave a little weird sometimes, eg it gives me the sideshow marvel even if I have not had one, or it will give me a sideshow when I have defeated the ringmaster, it gave the high wire multi ball video even though I had only locked two balls (did not give the multiball and gave the video again when I locked the third and operated multiball correctly) I joined the cirqus even though I thought I needed another acrobat loop (I went on to beat everything after that, 145 million + )
All these are now and again things which just may be the nature of the beast, does anyone else seem to have the same sort of thing?
It is also still resetting now and again so I think I will change the 5v thing on the board (not me but I know a man who can)
I also need to fiddle with the ringmaster, he sits a little low (I assume the plate he sits on should be level with the playfield or just below)

It sounds quite a lot of issues but 95% of the time I feel it plays as it should and I do seem to be getting there.
Great game!

Had a few problems with the high wire multiball when I first got mine - either not giving it or giving it too early (specailly after starting a game with balls already on the high wire). That was down to the pinballs being magnetised and sticking together, so not making the switch connections all the time (think I also had to adjust one or two of the switches).

Re the 'phantom' sideshow - now you mention it, fairly sure I've had that recently. Thought it odd at the time, but it's not happened since, so have not had to investigate further.

Yes, his head should be level with the playfield - if you have the original metal top (that is a larger diameter than the hole), I can't see how it can be lower ?

Cheers
Geoff

Geoff,
Sorry I mean when he is in the middle position, the plate his head sits on I assume should be just about level with the pf, mine is lower so a slow ball hit will get stuck on his chin, if you see what I mean?
Cheers Adie

A couple of suggestions:

Put the game in switch test mode and hit the side of the cabinet a few times to see if there are any extra switches being activated (or deactivated).
I'd also check the MPU for battery acid damage.

Adie,

ah, right - didn't read your post correctly. Yes, when he's in the middle position the plate wants to be at or just very slightly below. Even then it's still possible to get the odd rare ball stuck down either side of his head.

Cheers

Just an update on my CV, I think it has a split personality, you can have a couple of games with no issues and then have one where bad CV shows up and all sorts of problems show up. It will still empty the ball trough or tonight while playing a normal ball in play the flippers went dead and it gave me a side show, played the side show and the ball was returned to play as if nothing was wrong.
It still sometimes gives a sideshow after defeating the ringmaster.
Another game while a ball was in play, the ringmaster gulped and it started the defeated ringmaster video then reset.
I put it into switch test and gave it a good bang and shake with no switches registering, I also had a look for battery acid damage, I can't rule that out as there are some marks on the board around that area.
I have not changed anything on the board yet as I need a friends skill to do this, hopefully it may sort some things out.
It is a strange one as it can behave itself, but my lack of expertise in such issues means I can only put it on the naughty step for 10 minutes.
Cheers Adie

Intermittent behaviour like that will either be battery acid or a flakey (ribbon?) connector (plug or socket) somewhere. Put some photos up of the area that you can't rule out of battery acid damage for a second opinion...
