cost per game

Just looking at audits and worked out cost per game on the games that I have where I'm confident about the number of games since I bought it, overall in these games its costing me about £9 a game  Some surprises on the audits and I don't think they are right but Stern brought the lifetime in sometime after B66 and I'm pretty sure that I've played that as much as TWD. GOTG was at Pinfest and at Flipout for a while so I know it got a lot of plays - Also EHOH lifetime is lower than its current so must be a bug there (which is also making me question how reliable the lifetime counter actually is).

yeah I was just mucking about with the audits and came across it. they are easily worth it as there is no local place to play for me.

I did a similar comparison at the weekend, on number of balls played on each of my machines

Tron LE 4447 balls - Highest
MBr LE 158 games

Are those totals started games rather than completed games? - if you have machines where if you have a dire ball 1 and then restart till it goes right-ish that could change things a little.

This thread inspired me to look at the audits option on some of my games. I’ve never really bothered before.

Things I learnt:
1). I don’t play them nearly as much as I thought I did
2) Extra balls are actually really rare on a lot of my games. On EHOH I’ve only ever had three and I have no idea how I achieved them.
3). Number of games over 15 mins on TWD, one. Number of games under 3 mins.... let’s just say it was far more than one 😢

While games on brand new machines might have cost a fortune, for the games I’ve had for years they’ve appreciated over this time so with a bit of down day logic I can claim I’m getting paid to play them.

Urgh, that's a slippery slope.

What next, cost per lap on track (scary), per G of aerobatics (petrifying).

Haha #3 so true and I love the logic at the end. That's a far more sensible way to look at it!

Looks like you need to spend a chunk more time on Stranger Things!

New arrival, or not to your taste?

IIRC the Stern audits didn't seem to be working right when I checked mine in the past.
It was on BM66 or IMDN, I counted games I played for a bit, but audits were wrong

I had a conversation very similar to this with someone a while ago
I said if I had a place like Tilt near me then I wouldn't have any pins as I would just go there maybe twice a month and play all the new games.
He said he would never play pins on location as it is just throwing money away. But he was happy to buy a bnib Iron maiden for 6.5k and then sell it 12 months later for 5.4k. I think it had around 200 games on it. So that is some serious loss there.
I could go to a place like tilt for the evening. Maybe put in £20 over a number of pins. Probably get about 24ish games if I'm having a half decent night. Some may even be 3 games for £2.
Could do that all year and still only be at a few hundred quid loss. Plus I will be playing with other people, which is always more fun. Have none of the maintenance or up keep.

Obviously if you have older games then it doesn't really work out like that.

Let's be honest though. Most people who have a few new games like owning the machines more than playing them

Also for me I can’t really enjoy playing a pin unless it’s the only thing I can hear, it’s just a big sound mess for me otherwise.
An example was when I played TWD at Neil’s, just didn’t click with me but it was noisy in there. Bit the bullet and bought one, now it’s my favourite pin!
Having a room with pins to use at my leisure is priceless especially the last few months.

In the example you gave the Iron Maiden would have cost about £21/week. Would you rent a Pin for this much per week knowing you could play it whenever you wanted? My answer would be yes which makes it a bit more palatable. You could easily spend that amount on alcohol, cigarettes, coffee etc.

I totally agree on having your own games in your own space but if Woking had a decent pinball place I suspect I wouldn’t have a room with 20 of them. But playing in your own space is a godsend and I agree especially during lockdown but Pinball is a sociable monster and without events and people it’s not as much fun.

I think the calculation has to be done when you sell the pin.
I have 5 of the newer pins all in LE flavour and 4 of them were bought 2nd hand with very few plays one of which had 79 to be exact and cost well over 10k With the official topper.
So doing the math even being generous on how little was lost comes out at approx £32 per game.
When or I f it parts company with me it will be interesting to see what the cost per game has been for me.

To me and many others on here Pinball’s are a thing of beauty and sometimes don’t have to be played to appreciated. They are a thing of beauty that in my opinion are and I quote
“pure eye candy porn for sad old gits like me”
This is why I personally don’t really give a s@#t of cost per game but admit it does get you thinking for sure.

I have a limited budget and very limited space so I always sell my games to buy another when I get bored. I tend to break even on each game, sometimes lose a bit (or a fair bit when I bought and sold a NIB back along), sometimes make a bit (rare!). Overall pinball has been a way cheaper hobby than my other main one (golf).

What else would you prefer to do with your cash? If you sold up today what would you rather use the cash for?

Collecting pins is actually a really cheap hobby if you view it in the long run with the resale value factored in. Guess it’s different if the bulk of your collection is NIBs

I’ve had times when my pin mojo is low that I’ve considered selling the bulk if not all of the games, but what would I want to do instead? I’ve got zero interest in sport or flash cars. The average cost of a gig I attend is probably around a tenner so one game flogged will probably see me happily sorted until retirement.

I’m missing the social side of the hobby though, there’s only so much time you can spend on your own.

If flip out was 30 mins closer I’d probably significantly cull the amount of games here.
