Compact BBQ Recommendation - Cadac Safari Chef 2

We have a campervan and these force you to be ruthless about packing and the physical volume of items you take with you. Many sites ban the burning of charcoal, so we have used gas BBQs for years.

These are about £80 and are fantastic for picnics.



This thing is so good that we use it at home as a tabletop BBQ. Under lockdown with just the two of us, there is no need to mess about with a bigger one.



The key feature is the lid which greatly accelerates cooking and thus saves gas. Excellent design, good quality non stick coating, very easy to clean and unlike other little gas bbq units, it genuinely gets hot enough to really do the job.



The gas canisters can be found for about £4 each and I would guess you get 10 bbq out of each one.



Cadac is not a big brand in the UK but dominates the market in South Africa for gas devices. Braiing (SA for BBQing) is like a religion over there.

That looks really good.
I have had a Cobb bbq for years that I used when fishing, uses a large bamboo pellet or charcoal. The base and sides do not get hot to burn anything.
Your one would have been better for ease of use and cleaning.
Cooked whole chickens and all sorts in mine, used it in the garden this week as there is only 2 of us here at the moment.

Had my original Safari Chef about 5 years now, still going strong, used it in the garden the other day. The zip on the carry bag is broken and the pizza stone broke at some point.

Would be nice to upgrade to the 2 for the piezo igniter, but can manage without that I guess.

We use ours with campingaz 907, compact but expensive to refill in this country.

Last time we were in France we bought a second canister from the Super U, I think it was cheaper than a UK refill, and good for a back up.

I quite like the idea of these, recently had a few hit & miss attempts with charcoal so I’m considering a small gas one so thanks for sharing.
Can I ask is the gas a small canister that fits underneath? Like a small camping stove thing? Some appear to have connection to a big gas bottle? Or is it either?

I think I might have answered my own question I think they do two different versions HP gas canisters & LP has bottle

There are 2x versions of this BBQ. Mine is the HP one (high pressure, using cartridges). There is also a LP (low pressure) one that uses a gas pipe, regulator and a larger bottle.

Like @mark9 , I also need campingaz 907 for my campervan. The tank sits inside the vehicle's 30l fresh water tank so I am stuck with it. It is expensive to refill, about £30 for 2.8kg

For a little BBq like this, the little cartridges are much more convenient and are cheaper than Campingaz 907 ...

I've got one of these Volcano BBQ's. I don't think you can buy them in this country. I had to import mine from the states. It's amazing. You can cook with anything you like....wood, charcoal or gas. It's even designed to house a big cast iron Dutch Oven so you can even cook soups and stews.
