I'm sure the answer is on the website but I can't be bothered trawling thru.

If you buy a ColourDMD for yr game ....say Fish Tales .....can you at a later date update the ROM for another title and stick it in another game ....say Addams ?

I'm hoping the answer is yes ;) but suspect its no

Will only work if you have the gold roms installed in TAF. That's why my TAF display's still orange.

Edit - Sorry I was wrong! It does work with L5 roms!

Changing the software is meant to be easy. Installing is easy. So how ****ing lazy does it make me that I've never changed mine over from one machine to another?

My Color DMD works really well with the TAF L5 (not Gold) roms.

There are some animations i don't see because i don't run Gold, but whatever. Wouldn't see them in orange either!

To clarify - i get the Color DMD experience on my non-Gold TAF.

I read yesterday that they have now released a update for you to be able to use the sigma patch on the older screens so you can make them hd or with scan lines. The official site was down lastnight but I red it on an announcement they made on a site called performance pinball...... Just bought a sigma for tz but that's a secret

Oh sorry I thought you had to have the gold roms so I never bothered even trying it in TAF. I will now though, thanks!

Damn - this is getting expensive.

Got one in TZ set on black & white with HD upscaling, was planning on switching this to FT when the code was ready. But it looks awesome as it is in TZ so I've ordered another for FT. Now looks like I will have to get another for TAF.

No problem!

BUT i did make the following reasonably permanent modification to get the best from the THING lights: http://www.colordmd.com/Light Board Mod TAF and DW.pdf

This is still perfectly usable if I put the DMD back in again though.

on the same page I found they said there is now a download to fix the thing light prob on newer screens ill see if I can find the page again

here you go http://www.performancepinball.com/1/post/2013/04/color-dmd-new-and-improved.html#.U3uMCjtOXcs

Gotta sort out the THING lights on mine.
My problem is I have so many keepers it's getting a little expensive in having colour DMD units in them.
I got Dr Pinball to sort me a unit for my JM , and at half the price it's a great second option if you want colours on your dot matrix. I have a white in Spiderman and two shades of blue in JM and they both look the nuts.

the new update might fix your thing prob?

you can always leave the original THING lamp board in,slight mod needed to angle the pins, but thats it
Thats what mine has - the color dmd was originally in my MM,now in the TAF

Here's a snip it for you to see what a difference it makes, and at half the price of a colour or the same price as a standard orange DMD.

I have installed a colordmd this week in TAF with gold rom, the thing board is still not very bright. Couldnt see a fix in the link above.

The fix wasn't in the link it was just the announcement. It's prob on the color dmd site if u can get on it without crashing

Video not working.

I'm definitely in the " £300+ for a display is rediculous " group. Would definitely try DR.Pinballs solution next time I need a DMD replacing.

I thought that update was from last year. As I see it (and I may be wrong) there are 2 seperate issues in that announcement . 1. In order to install the colordmd you need to remove the pcb holding the incandescent lamps which light the thig letters. The original colordmds didn't support thing lights at all. Nothing. Then they implemented the feature to allow you to plug the thing light connector onto the colordmd. This would then light a section of the display behind the thing light to illuminate it. Cue problem 2. It worked but it's rubbish as the display can't light the letter bright enough as it relies on just displaying a white square behind the letter.
Solution 2. Remove the lamps from the original pcb and solder LEDs in their place (this mod is dealt with by another announcement in the colordmd site). With slim LEDs installed the pcb will fit between the colordmd and the display panel. Best of both worlds. Colordmd and a properly lit thing letter. It gives instructions but their is no drop in product to fix this.
I may be wrong on this but I think that's what has happened.

Looks like a lot of hassle modifying the light board, you have to remove the connector header and resolder the wires straight to the board, and also modify the leds to make them fit.

Hopefully they will come up with a better solution for this.

It was a bit fiddly, 2hrs work perhaps.
Worth it though.

I just bent the header pins to right angles and pulled dmd board back a tad
