Colour DMD

Pinball palace is the best place. They do both types and have them ready for pretty much all machines

That’s the price unfortunately. Even second hand would be around £350 I would of thought. Not many people sell them on. Only other option is pin2dmd which is a lot cheaper. But not as easy to plug and play

The only other option that i know of in pin2dmd, there was a group buy on here recently, i believe they are all gone now, they were £145. This need a colour file and this is not available for all pins
 
I have had both and would never look back from colordmd. So easy to take out of a game when you sell it and put in the new game. Just a download on to a usb stick, 30 seconds to install it then it’s good to go. Just make sure you know what one your prefer as there’s two types. I have both and still don’t know what one I prefer [emoji2357]

PIN2DMD have been a lot more popular than I’d first expected. I honestly thought 20 or so would be a good target.

To be fair, in the last batch no more than 3 units went to the same person - so lots of people from here have them. In total 135 provided through the 2 group buys.

ColourDMD is a great product, I’ve never owned one but have played a few machines with them installed - both LCD and LED versions. FlipOut have a few games with them from memory. They do look the business.

I’d dispute PIN2DMD being more complex to install. It’s a 20 minute like for like swap. And you can buy and install a power supply similar to ColorDMD approach. Most of the people Who bought through the group buys chose to power from the real pin directly.

Each to their own I say.
 
Is there much difference between all these different types of displays? Is pin2dmd half as good as ColourDMD? It’s half the price. Looking at getting one for a TSPP but I know literally nothing about them.
 
Oh wait, I typed in dmd2dmd in YouTube which is why I a couldn’t find them. Ok, ColourDMD does look a lot better.
 
It’s really depends what your happy with. My one was an older type pin2dmd, I think the newer ones are better, but always had the annoying join in the centre on mine. Think that may have been fixed now though. But after buying a colordmd I wouldn’t buy anything else. But again everyone likes different things so it’s what ever your happy with. The pin2dmd are very good either way you look at it

The join should be easy to fix - just loosen the screws a little that hold each panel in place and squeeze them together. The join should disappear. Don’t loosen the screws too much though.

It does take a little bit of persistence first time, but a lot easier when you’ve done 135 of the buggers!

Oh is that all it was [emoji2357] wish I knew that. I think the more colonisations that happen and that are easy to obtain will make the pin2dmd much more attractive. I had a nightmare trying to find one for my tmnt at the time.

You may benefit with a firmware update also. Again simple to do - what version is yours at? Should display as it boots up.
 
The more I look at them the harder it is to decide. Diagonal lines on ColourDMD look a bit ropey.
 
I have all 3, pin2dmd and both colordmd’s - lcd & led. The new pin2dmd looks better than the colordmd led I have but that’s a couple of year old or so.
I just like the fact I can change from dots to no dots (hi res) on the lcd.
I need to get one for my TWD but I’m holding off as I can’t decide lcd or led.

ColorDMD are always "professionally" coloured whilst Pin2DMD is a community hardware/software project but some of the top community artists are sh*t hot to imho the same standard. I don't know whether there is any superiority in the technical characteristics of the displays.
 
I've also heard that colordmd tender the colourisation out of house anyway, so. Likely very little difference. Down to the artist and the source material.
 
Is there a definitive list of what colourisations have been completed for pin2dmd?
 
I’ve not been able to take pictures or videos that do the pin2dmd justice, that probably goes for the YouTube videos as well. You really have to see pin2dmd with a good colourisation in to appreciate it.
Don’t forget you can easily change it to any 4 colours you want too, my Congo has a green dmd while I wait for someone to release a full colour version.
 
I think I'm edging towards the pin2dmd. I don't think I can justify spending more than the price of a PS4 on a ColourDMD. It's a really difficult decision though.
