Right guys not pinball related but thought some of you techies would know the answer @lukewells. After having a problem with my samsung lcd tv for a few months I decided to fix it. Basically when you turn it on it repeatedly turns on and off and cycles threw some channels sometimes finely turning on on its own or the result of me keep pressing the sky button. A quick Google tells you its a well known fault with Samsung due to crappy caps used on the power board. On opening the back of the TV sure enough a bulging cap.

can't really see the bulge in the pic but it is.

I got some new caps from rs
these which have an operating temp of -50 to +105

Sadly it hasn't fixed the problem which means it's the ir recever which is only £7 anyway. But my question is I used the first one (-50) could it of been to high and the -40 one should be used or does it make no difference? I just don't wanna replace the receiver for it still to be the caps. I downloaded the service manual but can't find that cap on the parts list. Hope this makes sense to someone

If it's in the switching section of the power supply best use a lower ESR part.

Any will actually do for testing.

Both parts you have linked are good. (Panasonic generally have a lower ESR than any low cost brand by default) The minimum temperature is not particularly relevant in this situation, the 105 degrees is the important bit as components can get hot in the power supply section.

Additionally it is worth noting that not all failed/failing caps will bulge, so you may have other bad capacitors, if they are all the same crap brand, and one has started to fail, it's likely others have too.

2 were the same brand so I replaced both there are a load of smaller blue ones and some panisonics from a warenty repair maybe I'll just replace all for the price they cost

Wish the service manual was abit more user friendly trying to see what's what on the parts list would be much easier than having to open the tv every time to read the caps

i was naturally drawn here by the post title. that little u with an extra bit on the left, that's a symbol that is. that means 'micro', which is the same as 'minute' or 'tiny' or 'wee'.

you're welcome. us experts are always happy to help.

Eek! SAMWHA caps! Bleurgh!

A quick Google for "samwha caps" rapidly reveals lots of forums post about crappy caps in Samsung TVs - particularly the XB and WC series - both "obsoleted" years ago. The general consensus is they're pretty ****ty. You can see how cheap even decent brands like Panasonis are (as @lukewells said both of the caps you selected would do) so just replace the flippin' lot. Overall cost probably less than a fiver. Happy Days :D

Yeah just need to open it up and see what type all the others are cuz try are smaller and there's 2 biguns

How odd today it turned on first time no probs so maybe replacing just the 2 worked after all. If it stays like it I'll leave the other caps for now as removing all 14 screws is a ball ache

Random capacitor musing....

Life is relative (non linear) to temperature. So if it's getting really hot, you might find that all caps die after a few years. It won't matter if it's panasonic, nippon whatevertheyarecurrentlycalled-a-con, etc.

Electrolytic caps are service items. Always have been, always will.
