Hi guys, I have a makita site radio DMR115 that I use for work which is powered by the makita battery packs used in their power tools. Seems to drain batteries fast a 6.0 AH barely lasts 7 hours. But friends with the same radio the identical battery lasts days. It’s not the battery’s as I’ve lent them to workmates with the same radio and lasted fine. When I had about a month left on the warranty I sent it to makita for repair and they fobbed me off. The first time they supposed replaced a component but the paperwork i got back with it said they replaced the carburettor lol as far as I know there is not an electrical component called that is an engine part 🤣. Anyway it was just the same as before. The second time it went back they said nothing was wrong with it but I think they were hoping I’d give in and buy a new one as the warranty was about to end. My question is what component do you think is likely at fault so I can try and replace it myself, what could be causing it to drain so much?
 
Open it up and if you can start disconnecting connectors? see what’s drawing all the current? What’s it look like inside? It’s it modular? Or mostly all on single pcb?
 
On my second one , the first one lasted about 3 weeks and stopped working the second is going strong at moment . I do feel that it is a throw away radio now , the original old one I still have for backup. So yah sell it as not working on eBay and just buy a new one 🫣🙂

It works though just don’t last as long as I’d like I don’t really have 200 to spare to get a new one lol
 
Looking at pictures of the circuit boards from other owners repairs it seems that Makita use cheap capacitors and the surface mount components suffer from dry joints. They don't look like the best made boards to be honest, like a lot of other consumer tat unfortunately.

Best hopes for a cheap fix are finding a nicked / working one with a bashed up case on Facebook marketplace / ebay and swapping the boards over, or giving it to some 'I'll fix it for content' youtuber because it doesn't look like it's worth the time and effort for professional repairs, certainly not with UK wage rates.

I may have a look when I have 5 see if there’s any bad caps I can replace otherwise I’ll just live with it
