Playing TPA (the pinball arcade, the digital game you can play on phone or pad or console) I came across this tip on CFTBL and it seems to work every time if I do it as he describes:

(pezpunk says) i have discovered a way to get an extra ball from the first snack bar every single time. if you listen to the (cheesy) background music after launching the ball, it plays a song that goes "verse / verse / guitar solo / verse". each section is about 30 seconds long. if you grab the snack bar during the 30 second span of the "guitar solo" (or "bridge") section of the song, you will get a Special or Extra Ball automatically. it happens about a minute into the game, so you have to be relatively quick but not TOO quick about getting the snack bar. (i've missed it by getting the snack bar too soon, but you have to be very quick to do so.) if you've done it right, all the rewards on the board as the selector flashes around will be "special", "extra ball", "light special", "eb countdown", "a new car", etc, and it will always stop on either special or light special or extra ball.

I checked the rules, all the tips and strategies documents, and even did a google search, but couldn't find anywhere this has been reported previously.

So ..... calling all Creech owners: please can you test this in the real game. Take the glass off and see how flexible the technique is.

Can you open the snackbar by target hits and by snackbar scoop hits just the same? (I think yes).

When you open the snackbar, that bonging noise, is it the same noise when you do this early-opening method as if you open it later? (I've only noticed the noise today, haven't noticed it before or experimented with it).

Does it work once per ball, or only at the start of the game?

Please report back with your findings. Also the ROM version you are using, as I don't know which version is used in TPA.

Cheers fellas.

P.S. sorry for whoring so much this last few weeks. No pinball at all since June 25th so I'm Jonesing, and thank goodness for TPA. My morning is your night, my night is your morning, and its no fun clicking refresh every 10 mins when you lot are watching Blockbusters or whatever is afternoon telly these days. Flying home tomorrow to my beloved games.

Never heard of this in the real game plus I have never got or never heard of anyone getting the "New Car" award from the snack bar.
Think its just a video thing.
Would love to find out but my machine is at Dan Hardys.

I can relate to that - insomnia is a b**ch but coming here at 4am is pointless and my keyboard can only take so much hammering of the F5 key. ;)

Have a safe journey back, and thanks for the culture lesson - it's been, erm, interesting seeing some of the stuff you've experienced over there.

OK, bets on this conversation happening....

Mrs Dan "OK honey, we're home. Can you watch Dylan for a while?"
Dan "But I was thinking of nipping out to the hut......"
Mrs Dan "Oh, no you're not, there's 6 weeks worth stuff to do starting with the washing and drying....Also I've been thinking if you sold a few machines this could cover the costs of everything you spent in Japan"
Dan "but......."
Mrs Dan "And yes, I been thinking about this new porn blocker filter for our internet, we're installing it tomorrow."

"New Car" pops up on mine occasionaly and it is one of those things that you are never awarded.

Just checked the following:
Plunged ball. Got KISS special shot. Hit snack the four targets before the guitar section. Hit SNACK BAR in guitar section. Awarded Millions with no signs of EB countdown on the list or new car.

Plunged ball. Didn't aim for KISS special. Waited until guitar section to complete final target. Hit SNACK BAR. Awarded bloody Popcorn.

Bugger all. 8 points or something, maybe even less. The only fun I get with the food awards is by holding a flipper in, so the bloke serving it gets throttled over 15sec or so.

Definitely less advantageous than an extra ball

I would guess like most computers, the randomness in pinball machine software is based on a timer.

I would also guess that TPA 'reboots' the emulation every time you press the start button. Therefore the timing of random awards in TPA would be consistent between games (whereas on a real pinball machine it wouldn't be... unless you rebooted between games and pressed start immediately as it booted up)

Yeah, TPA uses a 'known' ROM state, so things like that are reproducible, i.e. the skill shot on ball 1 on TOTAN will always be the top basket.
