BOP is down :(

Folks
Went to turn on my BOP only to find it wouldn't power up - noticed that TV on same socket was down also - tripped ring on fuse box - fix that - but BOP won't power up - test power socket all ok - change fuse on plug - still nothing. Open up BOP all looks ok notice a fuse on the power supply inside case open it and the fuse seems to have exploded - glass bits come out and the silver parts are wedged in either side :( :(

Managed to remove the remnants of the fuse but:

1: is there anything live in the cabinet I need to be cautious on? I've obviously disconnected it from the mains but often things hold power :)

2: what fuse goes into this that I need to replace it with and where to get it from?

3: what would cause this? The table played fine last week then I was in holiday and come back to this even though the switch underneath the cab was off?

4: the two bolts in the middle of the PSU were loose, I've tightened them but just wondering if thats the right thing to do?

All help appreciated!

Neil

ok so apologies for my noobism! Its the line driver that had the duff fuse not the PSU. Having googled there are two choices one domestic and one foreign, Domestic is 4A Normal (fast?) burn. Foreign is 8A slow burn?

EDIT: never do this work when tired! - domestic is 8A NB and Foreign 4A slow burn!

Thanks,
Neil.

but still concerned as to why this blew in the first place. Nothing obvious leading up to this.

My bop would occassionally do this. Don't put domestic fuses in there. I think it's an 8 amp slow blow. But don't quote me. Fuses available from pinball heaven pinball mania one stop pinball etc.. Not sure why it would do it.

Pinball Heaven and Pinball Mania both give good advice over the phone for stuff like this, I would give them a call.

Also check every fuse in your game if you have not done so already. All sorts of crap gets put in these games over these years.

Get a fuse puller tool, it makes this much easier and you are less likely to damage stuff when you check fuses.

Some times fuses just blow, it does not mean you necessarily have a major problem, but worth doing some digging.

So I've ordered some - in the meantime napkin err maplin have ceramic fuses in this rating - are they ok to use?

Cheers

1st thing to do is this.

Replace the fuse with the correct type, this will be listed in the manual on IPDB if you don't have one already.

Disconnect everything feeding the power to the Rectifier board to as just test the initial power input section and turn it on. Make sure it's not plugged into the wall while doing this.

If the fuse stays intact then reconnect the Driver/Rectifier board (talking generally here as not sure of the board layout for BOP) and turn on again.

Like spandangler says sometimes it just happens but theres usually a reason...

This suggests that it should be a 5A slow blow for your game. Interesting given that the 18v lamp matrix is a 8A fast blow. The blown fuse means that the start up in rush current was more than 5A slow blow could handle, probably the face motor getting slightly stuck enough to require more current. Replace the blown fuse and you should be fine. If it keeps blowing then you have a problem that requires investigation...

If it's the fuse in the switch box and the house rcd has been tripping then most likely it's a short circuit line filter inside the grey metal box.

thanks for that - is this something that i can fix?

Neil.

Neil if the problem persists and the fuse keeps blowing replace the line filter in the metal box on the right hand side of cab jim at my pinballs has the exact one you need or pinball mania or pinball heaven

Ok opened up the box and I think it must have come loose in travel I'm hoping just a fuse :) don't have the fuses they arrive tomorrow - fingers crossed I make make her speak again :)

So the fuses just blow - I've ordered a new line filter but weak am I with the soldering skills force - is there someone I could use to fix this near Surrey that anyone can recommend? Much appreciated - typical that one of the first problems I have is the one I'm least confident about fixing! :)

You can't own a pinball machine and be scared to pick up a soldering iron dude. Just have a go. Take photos of how it's currently wired so you get it right and go for it. Practice on some old bits of wire first and watch some of the hundreds of how to solder videos on YouTube.

My soldering is crap at best but it's improved over time. It can't make you pregnant so, what could possibly go wrong

A few of us on here use this desktop station with some success as it can do more intricate PCB work too;

Don't pay £70 for it, its always on offer, on eBay or RS and such likes do an equivalent.

Personally, I use a cheapo wand type for simple wire jobs inside & around the machine as I find it a bit more portable. I do fancy a gas iron for this in future, I can't vouch for it but noticed this kit on sale at Maplins yesterday

Edit. Here's the equivalent of the first one on Farnell - £38

I have the same desktop soldering station as Astyy has listed.
Its a great iron but a pain to use inside machines as you have the base to move around.

Something like this is good for working inside machines
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Adjustable...653&sr=8-5&keywords=Digital+Soldering+Station

Just try and get one with a longish lead on it so you are not lifting the weight of a trailing socket while you are working on stuff inside the machine (like near the flippers when you have the playfield raised)

The desktop unit is great for board work etc after you have taken it out of the machine.

As you are not confident with soldering yet I would go with a cheaper unit just incase (although you will be fine after you have done a few soldering fixes)
