I wouldn't even bother with the cleaning. Just paint it! That way you get a lovely shiny bright white to diffuse/reflect the light. All the boards I've seen seem to use a matt primer that is really prone to getting dirty. Using a proper top coat, either spray or paint gloss/semi-gloss, would give a wipe clean surface that's less likely to get dirty in the first place.
But playing the game is only half the fun. Messing around with the machine itself is satisfying too. It was a heap of junk when I bought it, and slowly but surely its emerging from the wreck that it once was. Got a restored playfield from Germany waiting to go in soon and then it's really going to be the mutts nutts...
