Perhaps every 20th time I turn the game on. I have a 5a fuse in there

Any ideas why pls ? Sometimes a slenoid, perhaps the knocker, fires on startup

Or should I just up the fuse ?

Thanks

5a is too low. It's a fast fuse. The game is specced for a 5a slow blow in the switch box, so this is the minimum requirement to prevent fuse blow at switch on. The 5a fast fuse will quickly fatigue as the current in rush is close to max rating. I install 7a plug fuses but they're not easy to buy off the shelf. If with 7a installed you still get blows, then suspect input filter.

I've encountered this before David. Sadly it will only get worse until you have to install 6mm Steel Wire Armoured cable in the machine and fit a 32A HRC fuse.
Best course of action would be to sell the game to me (at cost) and I will dispose of it in an appropriate manner.

You could try running it through a surge protector plug. Should limit the inrush a bit. You can buy them from Amazon, ebay or most hardware stores.

I get away with running 5amp fuses in most of my games, it usually games with multiple flippers and crazy multiballs that need higher than 5a, however everything Andy says above is right, I'd be suspicious of the filter too, so if a 7a doesn't work, that's going to be your culprit, UNLESS, are you getting any coils firing on turn on, or all lamps flashing for a second etc? That can happen with some games with a faulty blanking circuit
