I have an arc welder in our unit (from screwfix, nothing fancy) and wondering if it would be suitable for repairing. I've never done it before but happy to have a go.

There's an old thread on pinside of a company offering it in the states so assuming it similar.

Has anyone else done this type of repair before? And if its suitable, can you offer any advice?

I use a mig welder to repair weldments
If you use an arc welder I think you will blow them away
Arc welder s are good for welding them old girders 😂

The metal work I have had done in the past I take them to a local steel manufacturing place . The bits and pieces I had done have always been stainless steel ie ramps scoops etc so they have always told me they have to use a Tig welder not a mig welder , looks like @daveyp is a welder so you are in good hands !!

No not unless your going to be welding heavy structural steel like I do lol. Mig is possible with a small enough wire but TIG is the way to go. ( and just for the record I can't TIG weld so can't help out sorry)
Damn, That was my next question!

I'll have a look around, or just take it to someone....

Thanks

I am glad someone asked as I was thinking of MIG welding some broken weldments from TAF.
It can drop down to 30amps so I will test first on something so bad it needs to be replaced if I can’t fix it.

I use a mig welder with stainless wire on ramps and forms, on the lowest setting as they’re often such thin metal that they vaporise without extreme care, it’s not something I’d advise for anyone without welding experience. AND the results are never great visibly, but are often hidden anyway2D012D23-CFA7-4BCA-9BCA-C24B2A7B165F.jpeg3E0294DB-226E-4E79-BF4B-1BB5D4097BF0.jpeg

They can always be tarted up with a grinder? Or maybe a dremmel at that angle

You would be able to do it with a mig as Chris says, I have one that is good for down to around 2mm thick material but daveyp is right tig would be better as it’s easy to blow a hole with mig . If you get stuck I can weld it for you, let me know and I will try welding an old ramp here first and let you know if it’s suitable ( and I am competent enough) 😃
