All.

I'm trying to buy a suitcase on ebay that lives in Ruislip. It's collection only and the sellers won't courier it. It's from 1994, the design never caught on so they are very rare.

Is there anyone on here who is local who could collect it ?. Courier to me. It does not need fancy packaging or boxing up.

I'd pay you for your trouble.

Thanks

D

OK, as I am in the land of the nerd, I feel safe sharing .....

I am only interested in large, hard shell suitcases for aircraft hold luggage. Delsey and Samsonite were always the mid market leader/ John Lewis type product.

2 wheeled cases started to appear in the late 80s/ early 90s. But you had to take the weight at the front and drag them behind you ....

In the early 90s both Delsey and Samsonite also briefly produced hardshell cases that had 4x wheels along the long edge. They had retractable dog lead type straps so you could pull them behind you. As a side benefit you could sit on them and push yourself along like a hobby horse whilst queuing.

These are brilliant and the ones I much prefer. They are however unstable/ useless on bumpy ground so maybe that is why their sale was so short-lived.

Nowadays, 4 wheel spinner cases totally dominate the market, but I have never liked them as large volume hold luggage. The wheels are particularly exposed and prone to being snapped off.

****ing hell David, you are the King of The Nerds, i salute you. you really like your details, huh? Rolexes (ugh!), crockery (ok) and now luggage. which one of those 3 did you buy, the £79 or the £20?

i'm quite near Ruislip as well btw, but i only just saw this thread. it's 6 miles away (a 20 minute drive in London)

I chucked all my old hard and heavy Samsonite suitcases out to the charity shop. Recently. As per your second pic. They were good at the time but too heavy compared to the newer ones.

Confession time. I love the 1990s Samsonites too since the company I worked for on 1995 bought me a couple for my international business travels.

I have 6 large hardshell Samsonite Oyster hold luggage which have all travelled the world and are still in use at 30 years old. They are bullet proof.

In the 1990s recognising your case on the belt was difficult as there were so many Samsonites, but now they are usually the only ones on the plane.

When we do scuba holidays we have one case for our clothes and the other for our scuba gear (regulators in hand carry).

My sons also use them when they go on holiday on their own, particularly for ski trips.

I also have 3 1980s Delsey but don't use them for anything other than home storage as they have a design fault where they can pop open if you overfill them.

I suppose I'm a bit of a 90s man -same as the pinball.

I still have my old Samsonite oyster, just use it for ski gear storage these days. Back in the day it went round the world many many times, few scratches and scuffs but zero issues. Modern lightweight stuff seems to get wrecked so quickly but the old hard case is just toooo heavy.
