Advice from Cat Owners Please .....

Our 15 yr old cat has suddenly begun vomiting after eating. This has come out of nowhere. He has never had any medical issues of note.

Blood tests reveal no issues with his liver and kidneys. It is not hairballs. Not worms. He rarely goes out these days so we see what he eats and what he deposits in the litter tray.

The vet has given us daily steroid pills and twice a day liquid gaviscon (syringe into his mouth) to see whether this deals with it.

How can we escape the house now ? Has anyone faced this ? If he needs medicine like this twice a day - what is the real world solution to a weekend away or a holiday ?

Previously we would leave a huge bowl of food and water down for him and he was fine for 48 hours

We pay a cat feeder woman to come in twice a day. she feeds our cats and gives them their meds.

we found her off one of the cat sitting websites catinaflat etc.

Could it be a food allergy? Maybe change the make/type of food you feed him, although would have thought a Vet would have considered that option.

Same as us, local couple who run a business providing this kind of care for cats & dogs.
They send us photos each day while we're away and also write a short diary, it's incredibly reassuring.

He has been on the same diet/ eating pattern/ brands for years without any previous issues.

We occasionally give him hairball paste as he was sick every 6 months or so with a hairball.

We give him a small tin of meat for breakfast then a weighed amount of biscuits in 3 or 4 small meals throughout the day.

It is only when we go away for the weekend that we would put loads of food down. We have done this for years. He has never been sick when we have been away. He is lazy now so uses the indoor toilet facilities.

This sickness, vomiting within minutes of eating, is all rather sudden. The current medication has put a stop to it16679348284672617022337311071804.jpg
 
Bad news for us, took Mr Bubbles to the vets today. old boy is 19. losing weight. poorly hip. turns out he’s got failing kidneys and a groin tumour. on top of his existing hyperthyroidism. he’s lotst 1.1kg in 11 weeks. Looks like the end is near. poor old bugger can’t hear, can’t see much, but hey he’s happy and we love him. just keeping him comfy for the next few days or weeks.

Sorry to hear this Alan. My cat is also called Bubbles, cost us about £4k so far this year due to various issues. Nearly 17 yrs old, g.i issues, weight loss, ibd, poss lymphoma. Not putting her through an anaesthetic and surgery at her age, making her as comfortable as possible, and enjoying every day.
She is still a prat for smacking me in the face for food at 6.15 every morning though...

Like Humans and dogs.
Allergies can develop.
Our GSP was on same food for years then started sh^tting through the eye of a needle for months.
Couldn’t figure it out… put her on grain free diet - Food is Vets Kitchen + Lilys kitchen
All better for years now 👍
 
Our cat was about 5 years old and started throwing up all the time. Took him to the vets and tried so many things. In the end we changed his diet to wet food only.
It’s a bit of a pain as we can’t give him dreamies for snacks, but there are alternatives to give as treats such as lick-e-lix.
We are pretty sure what didn’t do him any favors was putting him in a cat hotel whilst we went away on holidays every now and again. He seemed to always have something wrong with him when we picked him up due to the stress of being in a strange environment with a bunch of other cats.

Fast forward a couple of years ( he is 7 now) and he is fine on his wet food diet and don’t over feed him.
