Addams Family switch problem

Hi,

Hadn't turned this on for a while, but did yesterday and it has a problem with the trough switches. Individually they all work fine in the Switch Edge test, but the right trough goes open when the left trough is closed even when physically they are both closed. I've had problems with the board before from battery leakage so it could be some failing track I guess. Anyone recognise this kind of fault?

Thanks,

Scott

Hello and welcome to the forum.

I would be looking for a simple short at the switches first, have you tested the switches with a multimeter?

It doesn't match anything I have had and I would need to look to what connector the switches go to be able to see the other end but I think it would be the the normal switches at the bottom of the main-board. I am not sure if battery acid could get to that and only effect that?

Can't see how it could be a short at the switch - if it were the switch would be permanently closed and wouldn't work during the switch edge test but that's not the case. More likely an open-circuit diode. Could be U20 but I'd start with the easy stuff and check the diodes.

Do the other switches on that column work OK - when more than one activated?

Have just had a similar problem on a TAF. One switch would register fine, but if a second switch was activated, then it wouldn't register either (or a third or fourth....). Turned out they were all on the same column and it appears to have been a problem with the connectors J206 and/or J208 - as wiggling these made the other switches register. Have since replaced both connectors and not had any further problems.

Cheers
Geoff

Hi, yes there was one other switch on the same row that was a problem, the thing flips opto. Turns it was was another corroded track on the CPU board. My CPU board now is a getting to be pretty ugly, but at least its still working:

Better neutralise that corrosion fast before it finishes the rest of the board off...!

Sounds like a good idea! How do I do that? I guess it depends on what was in the original batteries (which I've long since binned). If they were alkaline leaking potassium hydroxide then I suppose a light acid like vinegar might be ok?
