A fella I bought a game off before rang me up and said he did this to a STTNG.
he said he check the main incoming fuse and its OK but obviously the games not booting up.

Any idea what I should tell him to do next?

Thanks

Do WPC not document it? On my Bally SS and DE machines the transformer input jumpers are described in the manual.

I took a shufty in the manual and couldn't find it documented. If he doesn't care for manuals that's new skool ;)

Metal oxide varistor, the jobby inside the power box on the bottom of the cabinet, wee metal box or the varistor thats attached.

looks like that but its inside the metal box with the fuse holder in it

Daft question maybe, however i'll ask it anyway...

Why would it blow the Varistor/line filter?

The voltage requirements are changed by changing the jumpers by the transformer. This is after the varistor/filter, which as far as i knew were able to take both 110 and 240V (hence when changing the power it's just the jumpers on the Transformer - not the filter/varistor...)

Personally i would have thought some damage to the Transformer, bearing in mind that you have just shoved 240v down a less-wound 110v configuration... it's basically shoved 240v down the wrong windings...

Just inquisitive, thats all :)

If it wasn't the MOV that blew (Paul, 110v stuff can have MOV's that will blow at 240v - but in pinballs this is unlikely as they are usually setup for multi-voltage options) then it's bad news.

When you put 240v into a 110v transformer, its going to be outputting more than double the secondary voltages (i.e. 100v on the 50v, 24v on the 12v etc) so you will have possibly taken out some fuses/regulators. Also anything on the unregulated 12v line, will have got 24v shoved in it most likely. Could be a few things needing attention

The varistor or MOV must be changed for use at 240v. It's there for just this reason, to protect against over voltage. It is directly across the mains input. The MOV will have a rating around 170v. Anything over this instantly makes the MOV short circuit and takes out the line fuse in the plug or in the holder in the switch box. There should be little damage beyond this unless the MOV has been previously removed for some reason.

Thanks Ian,Now I can stop bothering you about buying yours ;)
And a big thanks to pinballmania.
That is some good info.
The guy told me this machine was imported from the states many years ago and has been in storage.
When I get it I'll take the MOV out of another game and set it to 240 and report back.

You can just snip it off. It's not essential to operation but long term you should probably put a 275v one in.

Safety first. Make sure it is not plugged in. I know it sounds obvious but if I'm working inside the switch box, I always make sure I have sight of the mains plug.

OK,
So 6 hours and 500km later I am now the happy owner of a STTNG!
Cabinet is in fantastic shape.

Like this all over!
Playfield has some bad chipping on the Enterprise green inserts.
And the ramps have some damage.
All the boards look 100%
Didnt do too bad for 600euro I reckon !

its still in the car.
need to find some local muscle !

Yes we have all made that mistake before ;)

Right lads!
Have the game running .
One problem tho.
When I hit a flipper it resets?
Where to start?
I have a roadshow i can swap out parts for testing if needs be

reset prob sorted.
Now just a sound problem left. The sound goes crazy sometimes.
u3 checksum error is what it says in the test menu.
Looks like 2 of the sound chips are eeproms .This normal?

Re-seat sound ROMs and ribbon cables on or to the sound pcb and see if that sorts the problem.

Thanks moon raker,
I believe it was a problem with the roms.
I put my pinsound board into sttng and the DCS board into my roadshow (with the roadshow roms)
The board itself works perfectly in roadshow.I can see it has had some repair work.
The pinsound is staying in stting!
will have to get another at some stage for roadshow.
