Hi

As you may already know the rules for awarding WPPR points for 2016 onwards have changed. In order to qualify, there now needs to be an element of head to head play. I don't believe that WPPR points are critical to the league but they are a nice addition for those interested so if we can retain them for the league, all the better.

It's not practical to include this head to head play in the regional meets without changing the format of the league as not everyone goes to each meet. And it wouldn't really then be a league! However, we can include the head to head play in the finals and I had been contemplating a change to the format of the finals anyway so seems a good opportunity to change this and is necessary to retain WPPR points.

So for this season onwards, the regional meets will act as qualifiers for the finals and the finals will only be head top head play not league format. And therefore we will retain WPPR points.

The format of the finals will be based on the Champions league with groups and qualifying rounds. I'm working on the exact format but it will mean an element of seeding based on the strength of each region (ranking and no of players, games played and meets held) and then playoffs (like the Champions League qualifying rounds before the group stages) to fill some of the remaining places. So some players will automatically qualify for A, others will play off with winners going into A and losers into B and then others automatically qualifying for B.

It will mean we'll need best part of a day (or maybe afternoon) for the finals. Whether we can fit this in at the Party (if it goes ahead) is another question yet to be answered. So what we might do is hold the league finals over the same weekend as the UKCS finals held around end Jan/early Feb 2017, to allow enough time and some players will be in both comps . We'll also try to keep the Hangover as another comp to hopefully make the trip worthwhile for those only competing in one set of finals.

Will advise more once we've sorted out the exact format of the finals but wanted to let you all know the plans for this year.

Cheers
Greg
