Run DMD - Clock

i like the look of it, liked it at the time but didn't fancy it as it involved some after-sales installation and i'm a bit lazy.

if someone bought one and regretted it, i'd be happy to pay to take it next and then pass it on. maybe we could treat it like a players' machine or a slutty girlfriend (ie it works fine but doesn't look the best) and just sorta pass it between ourselves so everyone gets to enjoy it?

that sounded terrible, i didn't mean it to come out like that, honest.

I have the clock in the pin room, great bit of pinbling

Sounds like an ex of mine from Greenford Dan.... do you know her?

I've got one. It's frickin awesome. If it's on when I'm watching TV, I end up ignoring the TV and watching the clock............... True story

How did you go about getting the animations for it? Or does the SD card come pre loaded.

Comes preloaded. you can update it as more Animations become available.

There are a few people trying to rip animations from other roms (i think Paul was going to try)

Its a great bit of kit but not the cheapest when you add in the frame etc, still cool though

I made one the other day, but did mine from scratch;

Purchased the 2 DMD's from AliExpress;
http://tinyurl.com/nvqvdw2

Remember for 2 of these you will also need a 10amp PSU;
http://tinyurl.com/ps8z546

Of course you will need the RunDMD board;
http://tinyurl.com/nubhua5

Then for the plastic I used the Plastic People;
http://www.theplasticpeople.co.uk/

I used a 5mm black Acrylic 760mm x 190mm with rounded corners for the back part of the clock, and a 3mm translucent red of the same dimensions for the front.

Using short hex spacers I mounted the board to the back plastic, then with longer hex spacers I mounted the displays to the back plastic, and finally using yet longer hex spacers I mounted the front plastic to the back one.
All holes were drilled using a Dremal.

All animations are included in a download which you write to the SD card dead easy really.

I'll video it tonight and upload it.

Would people please stop posting links to awesome gadgets I just want to buy.

As if restoring a Pin wasn't expensive enough.... :rofl:

They are awesome. Anyone fancy do a bulk order, as i would definitely have another?

So are you saying you could make up a few for resale at a good price ?
If so I'm interested.

Fairly easy to just do yourself (not trying to rain on Julian's possible new venture) even when you buy the run-dmd it comes as a kit.

I had originally thought I would mount it in an old dmd board but the clock is actually a good bit bigger than a dmd! Still you could cut a hole in a bit of mdf and paint it black. Stick the two screens on the back of it and hang it on the wall. Stick the controller board beside the screens on the back also. So a hand full of screws to mount them and a dmd cable to send the images and a couple of bits of wire to connect the two screens

Ok I ended up buying one of the plastic mounts that where being developed on the arcadeotaku forum, but mounting it all on a larger dmd style piece of wood/mdf would look decent enough I reckon..

Cheers

Me five ...
Same as dan if it's all set up and requires me to do nothing I am in :)

Ok.

So the clock itself isnt a problem. What Is is the frame it mounts in. I think on the first (and last) run it worked out around £40 per frame.

However, the plans are available, and in fact the company way well be willing to do another run...

So - Let me price some stuff up...

If anyone has access to a cnc machine that can produce from a .dxf autocad file, that could reduce the price considerably....

I still have contact with Limpan (the "go between" we used on the initial run between us and the manufacturer). If sufficient interest is there. They may well be happy to do us a pinballinfo dedicated run, where a kit is supplied with everything and it just needs the frame sorting :)

However - a word of warning - These overall dont work out cheap. however they are good, and rather unique!

Paul - might well be able to assist with sourcing the frames through a machine we have access to at work at fairly competitive pricing levels. I'll PM you with my email address (although you can probably see it as site administrator!) & if you send the details over I'll see how it works out cost wise

I'm not planning to make any apart from the one I have made.

I am very happy to assist those that would like to make one, it really is dead easy;

Buy board €109
Buy displays & PSU $56
Plastic front & back £38.78

You'll need some hex posts (3 lengths), screws for them and a little mains cable.

If anyone wants a hand building one, buy the parts, or contact me for more help (hex post sizes etc) and then lets arrange a time for you to come over and build it together and play some pinball, hell if there is a bunch of you we could do a RunDMD pinball mini meet.

A good build video (not mine)

@Paul

Did you see my PM re: spec for the frame? Initially just the overall size the panels need to be would be enough to get an indication of cost on as the specific routing needed within that won't particularly affect the cost

Sorry - yes - have been all over the country in the last 48 hours, so not had chance - Will fire this over tonight :)

Cheers

So, which of you clever tecky people is going to make me up (and others) a pinball clock ?
