Back when computing was a true hobbyists pursuit You could get the ZX81 in kit or assembled. I don't think it was *that* much more for the assembled but I guess some people liked the build yr own aspect.

I loved that era of computing. It was all so new and exciting.

I had the kit and remember getting home from school each night and soldering on a few more parts. Never thought I would need those awesome skillz again until nearly 30 years later when I got into pinball.

But did it work when you finished it ?

I remember the great ceremony of finally plugging it in and powering it up for the first time. Nothing happened.

I think i had damaged a pad somewhere, but with the help of my late father we got it going in the end.

Back then father's and their sons saw home computers as an educational thing.

Who, of a certain age, in the early 80s did not con their parents into getting a home pc for educational purposes? It rapidly morphed into games. Then what we have today - porn, fornication, drug procurement, consumerism, gambling, trolling, pinball support networks.....
