POTC JJP black pearl rules - help

For anyone out there with knowledge of potc, I'm being a bit thick. What exactly do you do to hit the other ship on the action button? I have a picture of a ship and circles that go from large to small at the bottom. When am I meant to press the action button?

Also, if I miss, I can never get the cannon lit again, is there a fallback way to start the multi ball having missed the shot?

After its qualified by hitting the targets & spinners the arrow will light, hit that. Then use the action button to fire at the interceptor (not going to tell you when, that'd spoil the fun). This lights Black Pearl Multiball which you then start by the left orbit.

I just played the Black Pearl stage and loaded the cannon and then watched the location of the physical cannon rising and falling rather than the little screen and sunk the other ship first time. Old school skills learned from STTNG!
