Pinball Tools

Nice one Nedreud. A classic Tektronix should do you well for arcade boards.

Highly recommend the Wera screwdrivers. The ones in my toolbox get used constantly and there is barely any wear at all. If you just want a couple of specific ones you can buy them individually on Amazon, else you can buy a full set of them which are somtimes on offer

Nice! Thanks @lukewells. Shame that 14 pack has 5 Torx in it. I very rarely use them and have a set of bits just in case. Will check to see if they have other packs with just screwdrivers. Like the included rack though.

The handles are an unusual shape. What are they like to use?

They do have sets with just screwdrivers, but when I was looking to buy mine, you have to buy one set to get Phillips and one set to get posidrive, so it was actually cheaper to buy 14 than 2 sets of 6 (and end up with redundant flat blade screwdrivers)

For electronics use, the Phillips set would be more useful than the posi

Eww, now someone has made me go and buy a cheap ESR like the one earlier in the thread. So by means of payback, this is the brand of Oscilloscope that I use.

Actually mine is the slightly older v2 which you can pick up new on Ebay for about 40 quid. Like this one:

I only use a scope for pinball stuff and this does all I need. Runs for hours on a charge of the builtin battery.

I have one too. It's a bit **** in terms of being a proper scope as it only really has a bandwidth of ~100khz. However, for general pinball use it's amazing.

Have you installed the benf firmware which much improves the device?

Wow, that little ARM-based scope is excellent! The v2 looks like it's actually based on a hacked MP3 player! Cute!

It's spec is a bit limited but for testing pinball stuff it's more than up to the job, especially on older SS. And it's certainly a lot more portable than my Tektronic TYPE 453, which weighs around 30lb (~15kg).

OOh thats a nice bit of kit.... however it only has a b/w of 1Meg... I have a "normal" scope, however to be honest it'll give you a hernia when moving it...

The DSO203 is nice tho... b/w up to 72Mhz with 4 inputs (2 analogue, 2 digital).... all for around £100...

So, I'm in the market for some new screwdrivers. We can see @lukewells has thing for Wera ;) Would anyone else like to make some recommendations? A set with Philips, PoziDrive and flats with the bias towards longer, slimmer shafts for electrical/mechanical rather carpentry/joinery and preferably under £30.

Some of the best are :-

Wera
Wiha
Facom
Bahco
Teng
Klein
Felo

Have a look and narrow it down to one or 2 and maybe buy one single screwdriver of your choice to test it out.

I narrowed mine down to Wera and Wiha (both German) and bought a PH2 of each (that's the size I use the most)

I found the Wera grips, although they look an odd shape, actually feel more natural in use.

I can also say now from long term use that the tips are excellent on the Wera's (lasertip prefered)

Don't get VDE insulated unless you need it, as it adds to the thickness of the shaft.

Have decided to go for the Wera Kraftform 300. I don't need VDE and I read many good reviews about the Wera Lasertip. And a mixed set of 6 is currently reduced on Amazon from £25.05 to £17.50, plus I'm a Prime member so I'll get it tomorrow via free next day delivery. Sorted!

People need to stop posting tool porn on here. I've already bought a new soldering iron and a set of digital calipers as a result of someones posts and i'm teetering on the brink of getting a random orbital sander and tumbler too. It's costing me a fortune......

You missed out Snap on, they have some great stuff for pinball maintenance.

I don't want to offend any snap-on fans, but the current range are mostly made in China and I think they are priced extremely high. You can certainly get alot better value for money on the made in Germany and Swiss made tools these days.

I understand that people that already use snap-on tend to be very happy and stick with the brand though

Thanks for the reminder: random orbital sander. That's my next DIY purchase. I have a rule with the missus: I do DIY with huge amounts of gusto and enthusiasm if I have an exciting new toy to do it with. Lately, most of my projects have required tools that have subsequently been very useful for pinball ;)

I think the digital callipers were my fault...

You've just reminded me I need to upgrade to some 12inch digital callipers for a couple of up and coming projects where 6inch won't do

After reading all these posts I'm getting the urge to click on all the links and buy, buy, buy but so far have resisted the urge.

The Wera screwdrivers as recommended by @lukewells and @Nedreud very nearly pushed me over the edge as i'm on Amazon prime trial at the moment, so close - both hands in pockets now and no @cooldan not for that.

I know what you mean, I bought some screwdrivers not that long ago so don't need new ones but am sorely tempted to buy them anyway :)
