I can't seem to find a thread on the upcoming competitions at Pinball Republic.
If there is one already, mods please delete this one.

30th November (Thurs eve) - PBR Birthday Pingolf (100% TGP)

1st December (Friday eve) - PBR Birthday Strikes (100% TGP)

2nd December (Saturday) - Monster Meet 10/10 Birthday Comp (200% TGP) at Pinball Republic in Croydon

3rd December (Sunday) - Monster Meet Birthday Classic (200% TGP) at PBR

I was really just wondering who is intending to come to these comps, what day(s), anyone staying over (where) etc..

Just seems unusual there's not been much chat about this (despite the absence of the usual thread starter).

I think Matt posted about it, but possibly in the wrong section. Was a picture of Monsters Inc with the PBR guys heads photoshopped on.

I'm in, staying at an Airbnb place a medium walk away.

This is going to be brilliant! Highly recommend it - I am there for both weekend tournaments and will bring James A at least for the Sunday.

Lots of folk signed up already on matchplay and I know of quite a few more who are coming.

If you missed out on the Tilt/Pinball Office - come along! If you played those and want more, come along!

Interesting formats in that you play 10x2 games mini series (one modern one classics) in the Saturday comp, each 2 game set with the same opponents.

On Sunday it's all classics - with 8 rounds of 3 game sets with the same opponents each round.

Haven't personally seen this format before in the UK - should be fun!

Playoffs will follow on both days for high finishers.

Also - a chance to play the great Chris Miller @Fantazia2 and more 😀

Ahh yes, you're quite correct.

Found the thread here.

Thanks.
I'll leave this thread with the link above to Matts thread, so people looking in the Events section can find it!
Probably best for people to post on Matt's original thread, and just leave this one with the link.

Reminder - Monster Meet starts today with Thursday night Pingolf action this evening! Quite a few visitors/non-regulars attending which is great - should be a fun start to the 4 days of action!

If you don't have plans tonight, are local and want to join in - do come along... or, Friday night, Saturday or Sunday! Player numbers are rising fast - this should be a brilliant few days.

See some of you tonight at PBR!

Anyone know how to remove a registration from the weekend events on Matchplay please? There doesn't seem to be an option, and we should only register if 100% able to attend.

Or @Nickoss II , @yellowreggae, please would you mind manually removing me for now please, thanks.

No problem Vin.
Will take you out on the day in case you change your mind!

Monster meet 2023 – Day 1 recap in brief - Pingolf

The Machine rolls on

A strong Thursday night turnout (36 in total) at PBR included a slew of welcome visitors to take on the club’s finest at Pingolf. The veteran Peter Blakemore, hot shot Josh Iles and the fast improving Gene Aw came to try their luck, as well as Steven Kielty, Tom Bagels and Chris Miller, fresh off his stunning 2nd place and first career trophy at the recent Pinball Office tournament.

18 holes of Pingolf qualifying ensued – other than a beastly waxed Medieval Madness with tight tilts and a tough setup Guardians of the Galaxy, in general the standard at the top was pretty high – with a score of 73 strokes the cutoff for playoff qualification (top 8).

David “TUX” Tucker qualified at the top – at last year’s Monster Meet he finished 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th across the competitions, a phenomenal effort – and he looked to repeat this success early through this top seeding after qualifying. It was a familiar group of PBR regulars rounding out the top 6 qualifiers, as Tucker was joined by McRae, Vince, Attwood, Simpson and Aw. UK number 4 Josh Iles took the 7th spot, and the hot and cold Swede Evrenos grabbed the final playoff spot.

Other strong efforts should be acknowledged – Steven Kielty came 15th in his first visit to the club, and James McElhatton came joint 16th to finish in the top half overall.

The playoffs were head to head matches over 3 games with Pingolf scoring – the higher seed being able to choose 2 of the games, with the lower seed choosing the other. In the quarter finals, Tucker defeated Evrenos 12 to 17, Iles took a close match over McRae 14 to 16, Brad squeaked past Stan 13 to 14 and Matt put on a superb display to eliminate Aw 5 to 10, opening the match with a hole in one on Centaur which Aw could not match and put him in trouble early. The semi finals saw Matt sneaking past Josh 6 to 7 in another high quality display – Josh will perhaps rue a 3 on a low target Swords of Fury (500k) with the chance there to progress. Brad shocked Tucker with a stellar 7 to 15 victory in the other semi.

The final was the Machine vs the Phenom – and yet again a first game hole in 1 on Centaur set the scene, and the impervious Vince marched on to another well deserved victory - 6 to 12.

With this Pingolf win Matt will move back up to 4th overall in the UK rankings, and in 2023 he has been nearly unbeatable at PBR. The next chance to try your luck is this evening, during the Strikes competition. The quality of the challengers continues to increase with Stormy Marshall and son, Robot Greg, Big Dave Fowler and Kevin Donovan amongst others entering the fray.

Can anyone dismantle the Machine? Come give it a go – you never know, you could be the next Roy Smith…! (2022 ICC Open Match play strikes champion)

How did the strikes go? I’m en route to Croydon stopping over at premier inn town centre any of the gang staying there? Catch u at PBR Tmw

Monster meet day 2 brief recap

Marshall Strikes Back

A dominant performance from Nick "Stormy" Marshall saw him claim first place with 3 strikes to spare. Marshall was back on top form as he strode to victory, winning 7 of his final 8 matches.

The other story of the night was the outstanding tournament debut from Richard Hawley, who kept riding the wave of success all the way to an unlikely heads up battle against the intimidating force of Marshall as one of the two last men standing. Nick wrapped things up quickly on Stars but it cannot be understated what an achievement this was from Richard considering the plethora of great players at the competition.

Final results:

1st Nick Marshall
2nd Richard Hawley
3rd Stan Simpson

Brilliant play also from Katie Vince who finished joint 14th overall in a deep field of 36 players.

Day 3s main event starts shortly - should be another phenomenonal day of top quality pinball action...

Congratulations to Yuen Aw, the winner of yesterday's 10/10 competition! Special mention to Keith Burden the runner up on storming past Nick Marshall in the quarter final and some big bloke in the semi's.

1st Yuen Aw
2nd Keith Burden
3rd Matt Vince
4th Peter Blakemore

Today's Classics competition is set to be another great days pinball, see you soon!

Very well done to Keith and the other top two!
at the bottom end of the table a very close contest raged between helen swaff and Ben leigh. Just a point or two separated the bottom two. A tense round 10 saw the two battling out with Ben to come 3rd to Yuen and Katie & Helen took 2nd I think.

let’s see what happens next weekend when the two of us face off again was a brill day see you all soon…

Had a fantastic time yesterday, thank you so much everyone that runs PBR and the comp, such a varied line up of games - quite a few I'd never seen before - and thanks to @Matt Vince for the quick tour as it was my first visit (about bloody time!). Looking forward to returning just after Christmas, and I'm keeping an eye on the classics standings today, good luck to all! (especially those that draw Gigi!!)

Congratulations to Yuen on another storming victory today!

The finalists were:

1st Yuen Aw
2nd Peter Blakemore
3rd Gene Aw
4th Nick Marshall

It's been a great birthday weekend at the he club, thank you all for your support!

We will see you again soon after Christmas for the Turkey Fry Up competition.

Had a blast yesterday guys, was great to catch up with everyone, shame I could only make the Sunday comp but sounded like the other days were a massive success too. Thank you to everyone involved in organising.
For those not at the remaining league meets at PBR this year I’ll see you at the post Xmas events.

Monster meet Day 3 (Main) and 4 (Classics) recap - Double Aw trouble

PBRs birthday festivities moved on to the weekend's main events where a tough field of 42 contested the 10/10 Main comp which would be 10 rounds of a main followed by a classic. 8 players would qualify for the playoffs which was a best of 3 random game choice .
It was the PBR 1-2 punch of Matt Vince and Yuen Aw at the top of the qualifying once the dust settled. Peter Blakemore was in great form and qualified third - and both Keith and Jack Burden also highly impressed to make the later stages and solidify a very strong showing for most of the SWL crew. The strikes Champ - Nick Marshall was still laser focused and another top 8 finisher. Perhaps the surprise package of the day was the unassuming Ben Pike - really struggling in PBR league this season with three straight bottom half performances. Ben completely flipped the script - playing like a man possessed all day to book his playoff slot.
The last qualifying spot was decided by a 3 way playoff between Leo Marshall and the best two players from the East Anglian Pinball Alliance, Nathan "the Real Deal" Garwood and DPOCK (Dan Pocklington) – Dan was the winner on Flash Gordon, earning him a match against the Machine, Matt Vince.
Matt progressed 2-0 over Dan, and Yuen survived a scare against the tricky Ben Pike who took him to a deciding game. Peter continued his strong play defeating Jack, and Keith Burden shocked the strikes champ Marshall to complete the semi finalists.
Keith was not done yet – following up this big win with yet another upset, this time against the home favourite, the Machine – winning a close game by just 1M points (82M to 81M) on Creech as Matt was housed on ball 3 when he needed only a couple of million points to win. In game 2 a strong game on Firepower sealed Keith's place in the final. In the other semi Yuen beat Peter on Demo Man and Lightning to advance.
The final was close affair on Scared Stiff with both players missing chances on Multiball to pull ahead – Yuen’s near 7 million after 2 balls just enough to take game one. Game two was on Spooky – Yuen had a strong ball 1 and ended on around 2 million after 3 – Keith started slowly, before getting used to the bounces on ball three and playing with calm and great nudging as ever – nearly doing enough but with an unfortunate drain to finish.
Results:
1st – Yuen
2nd – Keith
3rd – Matt
4th – Peter

On to day 4 – the massive classics comp with 44 players and 8 rounds of 3 games per round. Again, another top quality field had assembled – and this time it was a pumped up Ian Clarricoats who was the surprise leader after 2 rounds… with Marshall, Y Aw, Josh Iles and Conrad Chambers also in contention early on.
The Machine meanwhile was off to a terrible start – but after lunch his form returned and he begin to climb the charts rapidly… Also hot after lunch was Conrad Chambers, who played excellently all weekend, and Peter Blakemore – the former EPC Classics champion, certainly showing everyone why with some immense play throughout. Conrad led qualifying after rounds 5 and 6 but in the end it was the experienced Blakemore who took first place and a direct path to the final – alongside the on fire Gene Aw – with a stellar 13 first places out of 24 who seized the other direct finals spot behind a great game of Spirit in round 8 against Yuen, Anton and Kevlar.
Yuen and Nick Marshall would take the Semi finals berths, leaving Matt, Josh, Conrad and the surprising Clarricoats as the quarter finalists.
The playoffs were ladder format, with position 5-8 playing one game and the top two moving on to pay with positions 3 and 4. The two top players from that game would qualify for the final.
The random quarter final game was Centaur – much to the quiet delight of the Machine, who promptly smashed it for 3 Million points on ball 1 and book his place. Who out of Josh, Conrad and Clarricoats would join him? Not many would have bet on Ian coming out on top here but he duly put up a superb1.3M of his own meaning his fairytale run continued on into the semis.
The semi final was on Dolly Parton – which had been brutal to so many over the course of the weekend. This trend continued on ball 1 for players 1 to 3 – however Yuen stepped up and somehow put up 300K on ball 1, maxing the bonus multiplier and adding a few spinner rips to all but book his finals place early. Noone else could get much going, meaning Nick gratefully grabbed his pass to the final with a modest 31K of his own.
The last four men standing were hence Nick Marshall, Yuen Aw, Gene Aw and Peter Blakemore – and the final showdown was contested on Magic Castle. Gene jumped to an early lead with a great 900K on ball 1 – Peter was close behind, with Nick and Yuen starting poorly. On ball 3 the positions remained the same and Yuen had a paltry 186K, with Gene looking strong at 1.1M. Fortune was shining on Yuen this weekend however as he scored 2.2M points on the third ball to move into first – Gene could not overtake, but Peter fought well to the end to move into 2nd and finish on around 1.6M.
Results:
1st – Yuen
2nd – Peter
3rd – Gene
4th – Nick

Congrats to Peter for his 2nd straight top 4 finish away from home, and to my brother who finally showed he can actually play inside the country for once(!)
Other callouts – Martin Bedford who did brilliantly in 9th, so close to a playoff place; The rejuvenated David “Big time” Bowery – back in the top 10 of a packed tournament; the quiet but solid Mark Johnson in joint 13th– smashing it up for much of the day; Richard Hawley – showing his strikes 2ndplace was no fluke as he too finished joint 13th; Will the Monster Beynon – top half in 20th – no small feat in a quality field like this one.
Sincere thanks to Nick, Neil, Matt, Diane and all of the PBR team involved in putting on such a quality few days of events – all of the efforts really are appreciated. Thanks also to everyone who travelled near and far to support the club and the Monster Meet – it was a great to see you all and everyone together enjoying all the pinball and great games at PBR.
