Complete Bally Viking.

POP BUMPERS.

After a recent conversation with Matt @Matt Vince about the older style pop bumpers on s.s. Bally machines it got me thinking about things. Why?
Well these pop bumper bodies are only available in solid white so there are no options for modding unlike the classic Stern machines. You can of course choose a coloured skirt but other than that nothing.
The discussion was about illuminating the pop bumper body and cap, so I thought a comet dual sided pop bumper led should do the trick. One of these.....

But the trouble is buy the time you have fitted the lamp holder in the pop bumper body and plugged the led in most of the light inside the body is blocked, leading to disappointment. So the plan is to hardwire the comet leds directly to the g.i. String to allow all the light to pass thru the body like this.....

We simply removed the lamp body and added a pair of fly leads as above. Then with a glue gun and a white glue stick fix them in like this......

Solder the leads directly to the G.i. Or controlled lamp circuit (depending on the game, Viking pop bumpers only have one value so always stay lit). Here’s the results. Really makes a difference even thru solid body’s...... Note we decided to use a red skirt here, we did also consider teal (?)........

Fantastic thread Keef. Never heard of vector charts before. That playfield looks absolutely beautiful.

All the new owner needs to do is remove the leds and bingo

FLIPPER MECHS. (WITH 7 DIGIT SCORING(?).

What are we harping on about now for goodness sake! I hear you all cry.....
Well here’s the deal. We want to convert this Viking to 7 digit 5v displays. What’s the point of going to all that trouble when the average score is going to be 200k - 500k. Exactly we agree, so what we have been doing for our customers when they want seven digit scoring on their old Bally s.s. Machine is add the awesome super strength flippers! ( AQ-24-570 34/3600).
These are beasts and transform what was an olde trundle bus into a Lancia delta integrale! It plays fast! This then gives the potential to score into the millions. (Well perhaps 1 or 2 millions😂)......
Here’s the condition of the old mechs.....

Here they are rebuilt. With the new coils. E.O.S. Switch, bushes, mech parts and red flippers with purple superbands. That spinner is really gonna rip ...........

Also we dismantled all the other mechanisms for cleanup and repair/replace parts as necessary, here’s the parts before..

And after. Some parts were hand polished other smaller parts went in the tumbler for 48 hrs.

Be sure to always replace the coil sleeves as scrimping on this is really crazy if you have gone to the trouble of stripping and cleaning everything. Dirty cracked coil sleeves = loss of power and efficiency 💥 silliness indeed.......

I had to remove one of those 24-570 34/3600 coils from the upper flipper on my flash gordon as it caused ball damage to the top of the right ramp, but I agree they do give extra umph to the older games

To everyone that’s been following this thread I feel that I owe you all an apology and a brief explanation as to what’s been going on.......

Firstly the apology.
Due to a crazy level of work this season we just didn’t have the opportunity to log the rest of this build / refurb. And on top of that as many of you know my father passed away recently suffering from late stage Alzheimer’s disease.

So back to Viking. This game is awesome. It’s fast and addictive. It twists yer melons. How you might ask. Well the moneys at the inline drops. Until you max out your bonus that is then the strategy changes to the left saucer. Where you can score 295k in one shot. But here’s the thing that spinner up the centre! Resist it if you can, let me tell you it’s not easy as it’s such a satisfying shot.....
The seven digit conversion adds another dimension to the game play and long term strategies.......

The machine is now ready to visit SWL Salisbury @Moonraker club. for the festive competition weekend. So why not come on down and play it for yourselves. Here’s a few pictures of the restoration. I will post some better ones later this week..
Keeeeep flippin........ Keef. 👊🏼
