I'm looking to buy one to help find studs/ electric wires/ copper water pipes/ plastic water pipes.

Prices vary enormously. Take Bosch models, prices run from £30 to over £400.

Drilling into a plastic water pipe hidden in a wall would be such a nightmare it suggests playing safe and getting a decent one.

Does anyone understand what's what ? Is there a good compromise ? Or do you have to pay a fortune to get one that actually works ?

Thanks

I have a basic £20 one from Amazon which does the job but does give some false positives every so often.

Do the more expensive ones detect plastic water pipes? Thought they were only for wood/steel/electrics.

I used a thermal cam to find the plastic pipework for some radiators before drilling.
