Twilight zone messy wiring J114

I am shifting my tz, which is regrettably a backbox off job

I thought this j114 wiring looks odd, with at least one seemingly superfluous connector, and a rather ugly join. So a load of mess floats in the backbox

Is this right ? Or has someone messed with this in the past please ?

Yea thats how it comes from the factory with the "Zed" connector in the middle. They did that on games with loads of stuff to power the extra boards in the game.
