Trouble shooting the lamp matrix

Kind of perversely enjoying this one and enjoy using Pintrix on the iphone. Going to make up a testing LED with diode to do it at the connectors later I got thinking about building a unit, with 2 x 8 position switches, an integral LED lamp for OK and 2 x ribbon cables to two 9pin connectors... I think (as usual) that I'm using a mallet to knock in a drawing pin.
