TAF Sound Problem & playfield wear

I recently purchased my TAF 'unseen' from a guy who seemed really genuine only to receive a very neglected pinball. Apart from dirt, dozens of failed bulbs, a broken ramp switch, cracked ramp, misaligned bookcase turntable and homemade 'cover up' of wear on the playfield, all of which I think I can sort with cleaning and new parts, there is a problem with sound in so far as only the tweeter (RH backbox) works. I have temporarily connected a speaker to the mid range (LH backbox) which kicks into life but nothing happens when I connect it to the cabinet speaker. Anyone have any suggestions/ideas? May consider a playfield swap as wear is quite bad on festers head between the flippers and probably worse under the mansion decal/overlay that's been applied; are there any good/new ones out there or good quality decals/overlays that anyone can recommend? Advice on any of these issues would be most welcome! I know the pinball sounds like a dog but the cabinet is in good fettle and it actually plays remarkably well all things considered.

Hiya Cherryadams, and welcome

I had a similar experience - It was early evening in winter and i couldnt see the machine too well under torchlight. Anyhow got mine back and found the internals covered in black soot (not dust - There has obviously been a faulty board in there at some point!). I was lucky and managed to pick up one of the IPB repros, which was in turn clear coated for me by Chris Hutchins, however a warning - it really wasnt cheap (around £6-700!).

the decal is probably the best way to go - maybe replace the decal and adjust the flippers etc properly so they cause no wear on the decal - this is how it should be done. If you read the installation with regards to the decal, it is possible that if the instructions were followed that underneath the playfield has been sanded and then the decal to cover any damage....

I think (and i haven't checked the Diagrams) that the two backbox speakers are commoned together anyhow - however the cab speaker is a separate feed i believe from the amp board - The scematics are available from ipdb.org

Welcome to the madness.

Decals will be the cheaper option to sort out your playfield wear issue's, Phil at Pinball Heaven has just listed two overlays on ebay that could help you and others are available on other sites.

Let us know how you get on.

They are of a very high standard, not that you would get anything poor from Phil.

Thanks Paul. I spent all day dismantling, cleaning & installing LEDs purchased from Phil at Pinball Heaven on Sunday and it's a remarkable transformation even tho I say so myself. I've removed the homemade Fester's head 'sticker that covered up damage and have carefully peeled back part of the mansion overlay and, not surprisingly, the playfield hasn't been sanded which explains why the overlay is raised - bodged! I will remove the overlay in the near future once I've fixed the switch and sound and played it for a while to make sure it's worth spending the time & money restoring it to something like. So far I've found it near faultless in operation and as addictive as I remember so big smile on my face. I don't think the flippers caused the damage on Fester's head, not sure how that happened other than heavy use but haven't found an overlay anywhere for that during all my Internet searching, all the mansion overlays seem to finish at the top of his head; anyone know any suppliers?

The damage caused to Festers head is from where the flipper makes contact with a worn ball. One of the worse things is to have is a damaged ball flying around the pin table, its acts like sandpaper causing damaged. And when a sudden change of direction like being hit by the flippers and moved around by the three magnets its no wonder the playfield has got damaged.

First thing you need to do if you haven't already is CHANGE the balls.

I am pretty sure there is no decal for Festers head but I will have a look and see whats out there. You may have to go down the paint and repair route.

The good thing is you are enjoying and having fun playing the machine.

This is its number 1 job, cosmetics come in second.
