is anyone on here a structural engineer? I'm replacing an upstairs bathroom and need to re-route the waste plumbing, possibly through a joist, and need some advice about what is / is not feasible.

It's solid timber. But where I would need to cut would be outside the building regulations 'standard' guidance; I'm sure it would need some sort of reinforcement of the joist, but I need a structural engineer to help me with the maths to make sure it is safe :) Are you a structural engineer Carl - you are actually just up the road from me?

No mate !!
just a little old joiner
if it was a I beam you could put a 6" hole in the center
as for a solid joist thay are over sized by about 1 1/4" to allow for a cut out on top of the joist for pipes.
holes can be cut in the center of the joist (1 1/4" ) but have to be over 300mm away from any cut outs to the top of the joist.
The most likely way to do it is to trim the joists (double joists up /cut out /hangers etc)
