So if these modern Sterns have all these different voltages and circuits and stuff why are the dmds different in different country's when they are just ickle wickle low voltage leds...
Mine is from Europe....

looks like your old one runs of 12volts and the new one only needs 5volts?

So the missing circuit reduced 12 volts to 5 I guess. I don't get why that would be needed in different countries. The new one is from a Spiderman which was released same year..

That's how it seems but I could be wrong buy that supply plug should carry 5v and 12v I think? I guess you would need to be sure before changing them? what was up with the old one?

Voltage was 4.75 ac according to my mate that knows how to use a voltmeter but the new dmd was showing a blank, checked feed from ribbon cable was right way round...
Old one has a few lines permanently on, have sent to Phil at PH but he said it may be some time to get fixed so went with a replacement. The power feed does appear to come via a bit of a hack tho....Anyone seen this before?

Yes as above needs to be DC volts, the old one has a rectifier by the looks of it, 4 diodes but looks beefy for 5volts, you might need to get a clean 5volts from elsewhere maybe 5+ test point?

On the 3rd pic I posted it says power input 9-12 volts ac with a dc/dc converter, very confusing but I will look for a clean 5v dc somewhere and see if I can get the new one firing up....

Pins 1 and 2 are ground 3 and 4 are +5v I guess you could use a pc power supply to test it ? but that hack don't look clever!

So it turns out my dmd wasn't standard and was powered by a hack. Wish I'd investigated that a bit further before plugging in a replacement. Phil at PH now has 2 dmds from me to fix....

I found that the original feed to the dmd had been cut and taped and the wires added to 2 different ones which traced back were red 8v ac and blue/white which was 13 v ac!! I know nothing but can one be taken from the other to give me the 5 (4.75) v ac we measured? Either way probably wasn't best to plug a dmd that required 5v dc into it. Live and learn. Damn my eagerness to play fart multiball
