Star Wars Trilogy boot problem

Hi folks - I was replacing some broken plastics and repairing parts on my Star Wars Trilogy pinball this week and when I've come to put it back together, something's not right.

When you turn the machine on, the DMD fires up, shows the Display BIOS revision, beeps 3-4 times then turns off. The volume is set to very high (it was set to very low last week). If you leave the game to idle it fires the same unusual tones after 10 seconds. Does anyone recognise the diagnostic tones?

It's normal startup would be DMD Display BIOS (v4.0), one beep, Game BIOS version (v4.03) then into the game specific attract animations.

It takes two presses of Start to start the game up and it fires more unusual game audio. The left flipper has stopped working in game, however I can hear that the left flipper button does work when in the Portals service menu. I have checked the voltage on the left flipper coil and it’s getting around 75v, same as the right coil.

The volume diagnostic button does not appear to work but you can get into Portals. As the DMD is off, I can't see anything though.

Apart from the plastics and a broken diode on the 4 bank drop target, the game didn't have any issues last week and played fine. The game experiences the issues with or without the 4 bank drop targets connected so I don't think it's them.

Here is a video of the start up -

I have checked the playfield and backbox fuses. Nothing appears blown or burned out in the backbox. Most (all) of the playfield lamps appear to light and flash when the game starts up.

Does anyone have any ideas what is wrong?

Thanks
Graeme.

When you were working on the game did you have the power on at any point or was it always off? Were you just changing plastics on the top or did you do anything under the pf or in the backbox?

cheers for the replies folks - I've reseated the cables in the back box but I haven't done the chips yet. I'll do those on Saturday morning and report back (it's too loud to power up in the evenings at the moment).

The game was off while I was working on it, but I powered up once part way through to clear the ball trough to get a screw I'd dropped into the trough. At that point, one lamp connector was unwired and the 4 bank drop target was unplugged (and removed from the game). I am fairly certain the game boot up played the 3 tones at this point but I don't remember the display status or portals as I only needed to clear a single ball to get to the screw. (The screw wasn't shorting anything and the trough still works).

I was primarily working on the playfield plastics/ramp but did have to go underneath for the drop target. When I was moving between the playfield and the underside, I had the table locked back in the snap-in keeper bracket and the death star turret cable came loose (this one was quite a faff to get reconnected for someone my height!). It was wired back in before I finished up the game and tried to power back on though.

Is there anywhere that lists what the boot tones are or is that a red herring?

Regards,
Graeme.

Hello Graeme,

I know this is an old thread but can't see any follow ups, so forgive me if you've already solved this.

I can't help with your specific problem mate, but I have a SWT, so if I can be of help with photos from mine which works (with a minor x-wing problem that I haven't had any time to look at yet), then please ask and I'll be happy to do all I can with pictures etc. I have a manual and a spare print of it too, should that be of use to you. Just let me know.

Cheers,

Johnny

Cheers Johnny. The machine's still broken but I'm hoping to borrow Big Phil's Starship Troopers Whitestar board this month and do some tests to see if we can isolate what's wrong.

Thanks
Graeme.

Cool, no worries. May the force be with you! :) If I can help in any way with pictures, video or if you want me to take pictures from my manual/schematics etc, please just ask.

Cheers,

Johnny

Nice. These are quite rare over here? Never seen one in the flesh yet.
This is probably the first time I've played one myself?

I've heard nothing but bad things about the Sega Star Wars and the IPDB rating is pretty poor, but I actually found it very fun to play (Think I finished fixing it 6-9pm and was playing it till about half midnight )

The music was a little weak at there is a lack of variety in the shots for the modes, but it certainly was a fun game overall. I'd consider owning one in the future.

Nice perks of the job :), get a long test of her in. I know the rules well, it can get boring quick but wouldn't ever say no to a play on it. Can't comment on the difficulty because in VP it could be easier or harder than real game.

Star Wars DE isn't as deep and the monotonous ramp but just prefer that one for some reason.

Thank you very much for sorting it out Luke, you're a life (and pin) saver. Got it safely back to Phil's house earlier this afternoon but had to put it straight away - Can't wait to see it set-up at NERG next weekend.

The Sega one has made me realise that what the DE one is missing is "modes" the problem is you can get away with just going for your favourite shot all the time.

The center ramp is no longer a problem on the new DE firmware version, as the ramp scores bugger all now, instead you just end up pounding the deathstar to get multiball over and over again.

I love my DE playfield, so maybe in the distant future a version of the software with modes would make things even better
