Star Wars (data east) dead :(

Hi everyone,

Brought a challenge for my first machine - a dead data east Star Wars.

So thought I would come and pick your brains as to where is best to check!? Any hints or ideas or links gets a massive thanks

I've checked fuses and all seem fine visually.
Got to buy a new multimeter and will check properly.

Do these machines have common failure points?

Any help would be a good start, if this gets to involved for me I may just sell her. But I don't give up easily

Start with the on/off switch in the recess under the machine. Then have you checked the fuse In the grey metal switch box, inside right of the door.
 
My SW was dead. Power supply and CPU needed repairing after it was stood in a garage for a couple of years but all up and running now from help on this forum

Definitely gonna need a multi meter to start problem solving.

Have a read of the site below it helped me out loads when checking things.

You need to start at the beginning and the beginning is having a multimeter. Once you can verify what voltages (if any) you have coming off the power supply you can then check things further down the line.

Hey, thanks. I'm going to be checking voltages hopefully a bit later today.

Dazza73 - if it turns out to be CPU or power supply, are these types of parts expensive?

They can be from what Iv'e seen but I just got mine repaired.

Well gaz that's how I feel when I look at the inside! A loaf of bread...

Got my new multimeter so will be attacking the challenge tomorrow.
So no doubt a whirlwind of questions shall be flying about.

Hopefully that person that is local to me shall make them self known in the mean time.

Might aswell start with a stupid question, I'll assume that it is all 12v after the power supply??

So I know what to set meter for?!

I'll upload some pics hopefully tomorrow of any concerns I have.

MPU runs on 5vdc not 12vdc

Ok.
What setting would that be on the multimeter? I've done 12vdc before but I'll have to have a different setting for 5vdc wouldn't I?


Prob a dumb question, but best safe than sorry.

Don't know without seeing your DMM but I'd guess there's a 20V DC setting....just stick it on that for measuring 5 and 12 volts.

Your meter will be a ranged meter, you simply set it in what you expect to be reading. So if its under 100vdc, set it to 100.

On your power supply you should have loops of wire near the top right of the PSU, use your black probe on ground and the red probe on each of the test points (should be three, unregulated 12v, regulated 12v and 5v), report back your findings.

The slo blo fuses used, can they be replaced with normal fuses just for today? For testing purposes. Then tomorrow when the country is back to normal I can buy some proper replacements.
 
As long as they are the same value but bare in mind they will blow a lot easier than SB ones, for now, I would just isolate the power supply by unplugging everything except the big connector at CN1 and do your testing there.

Hey,

Thanks everyone for your advice! Been real helpful :)

I'm glad to say I have her all working now :)

Apart from a few bulbs everything seems fine :)

I'll upload some pics when I get home and a couple of short clips.

Sadly tho, think I will have to sell her.
 
I changed the fuses that I wasn't happy with, literally checked that all wires were secure and had contact. And the fuse holder just to the right of the door inside changed.

And boom just fired up :)

Gave her a Huge clean and just couldn't stop playing :)
