Soldering Iron

Always worth having a spare eh Paul? ;)

Good advice from Luke too. I did a load of practicing by desoldering and then resoldering components on old PC motherboards and Xbox boards. As Luke says it's not something you can just pick up and start doing, although it does help a lot if you really take your time. Despite practicing previously I was still really nervous taking a soldering iron to my R&B when I blew a transistor.

Same here there's still stuff on boards I'd get others to do still scares me abit

Been and colllected mine. Looks like a pretty nice bit of kit for the money and far better than my fixed temp 25w iron.

Thanks for pointing it out Paul. :-)

Next up I reckon I might invest in a desoldering station.

What's the quality like ?

Good for the money. It's never gonna be as good as the more expensive stuff but I used mine to do all of the displays on my FG and it worked a treat.

Pretty much as people have said. I don't do that much soldering so investing in the kind of kit that Luke had would be overkill.

For the money it's a good entry level iron and should do most of what I need.

Pants! Missed this rather good offer. 60W Professional LCD Solder Station with ESD Protection is back up to £59.99. £30 was a steal!

Bit of a necrobump on this thread but I was going to post a "Best Budget Soldering Iron?" question but thought I'd search the forums first. Very tempted to get one from eBay that are currently going £39.99 BIN with free P&P, although occasionally they crop up for £29.99.

Found an almost new one on eBay for £26 posted. Job done. Would very much like to get one of those desoldering stations (not the hot air rework things) but at a minimum of £50-60 I think I'll be sticking with my old faithful Maplin desolder pump.

I bought a Dremel Versatip since it runs on butane (no power in my garage). Heats up dead fast, love it. No ESD risk and you can control the temperature with a slider, though no LED display of course.
